Not quite what you think, there’s a bit more to it than what the title/thumbnail suggests.

First scene where the dog "talks" caught me so off guard, holy hell.
Entertaining to watch and this vid explains why nicely 👍
This was all done in Blender, now I'm interested in seeing it.
For a moment, I thought the main-robot had a hammer and sickle on his chest.
Made in Toronto by a bunch of my former co-workers
People like to chat a lot of shit about Blender because it's not "industry standard". But it's a fully featured modelling and rendering application, it can do damn near fucking anything you want.
You just need to learn the myriad of keyboard chords to actually do anything at any real pace. Though that got a lot better a few years ago with the UI overhauls.
I just watched it, it was really good. I passed over it earlier because it looked kind of generic, but I'm glad I watched it. I loved this shot.

Definitely got me interested. I think I’ll watch it tonight! Love the idea of smaller studio animations coming through, that are actually of quality.
was it done in cycles? This seems too nice and with too much post work to be cycles. But vray's blender branch doesn't seem sufficiently developed to me to be suitable for production.
There's some other renderers, like one that just came out that's called Luxcore, or red shift, but none have been around in a good state long enough to make a film of this scale.
i watched like one minute of this video and went and watched it.
damn this kids movie has better robot action scenes than pacific rim wtf
Yes is was rendered in Cycles. They also used some more advanced soft body simulation for clothes and other parts that should make it into Blender with 2.8.
Principled shader (implementation of Disney principled model) did a lot for cycles, especially for the style they went with.
Next Gen is a really great movie and that its almost fully made in Blender3D just makes a lot better.
The shit talk aside, Blender sadly has no real place in the current (big) "industry". This is due to the open nature of Blender and its general incompatibility with industry standard tools and pipelines.
It works great if your pipeline is based around Blender like Tangent who made Next Gen but as it stands the majority of the industry uses extra plugins and pipeline software that does not integrate with Blender.
The top reason for that is that the current license Blender3D uses does not allow 3rd party plugin/pipeline makers to integrate/interface into Blender without making their own software open. Obviously something they would never do.
There are open source licenses that allow for such things but Ton Roosendaal is apparently not a big fan of that.
Close second is that most top pipeline and plugin makers probably won't bother with Blender Integration to begin with. It costs money and why spend that money when all the big companies pay big $$$ already.
A third reason would be the lack of official support. Its actually a big thing for studios to have a direct support contact and almost instant support. Blender could never offer that.
Those reasons (and a few other reasons) make Blender not "industry standard" compatible. Of course as I mentioned in my 2nd sentence Blender is an amazing tool and it closes a neat gap in the industry that isn't major studios.
Smaller studios or local productions are a prime target for the use of Blender. There are already a ton of smaller studios, especially in some poorer countries that use Blender to create animations and for education.
Of course Blender is also capable of full feature movies, Next Gen is the best example, although past Blender Open Movies have shown that plenty in my opinion, although that will probably be still a niche for a while.
I mean if you can make a movie using Blender then fuck yes, well done, it looks really nice too.
ok wow, didn't know cycles was that up to snuff.
I still need me that UDIM support though. Making shit like mine without UDIM's is an arbitrarily awful nightmare
the problem with blender is that it's ux is schizophrenic and changes about every single minor update
Yeah it really suffers the Open Source curse of "nobody here knows a thing about UX so lets throw shit at the wall and see what sticks".
Have you ever used an autodesk product? They reorganize that shit once a year with no rhyme or reason, so you have a bunch of sometimes redundant features lumped together in a big pile without structure, and just as you learn it they tear it all up and somehow make it worse.

Oh also shit like this. I have hundreds of screenshots like this, where a crash was so spectacular it demanded being preserved for future generations to marvel at.
a year is better than like, every month, its not ideal i agree yeah.
The worst thing about this movie is the fact that they took away that sweet half-pipe soccer field at the end.
I don't know what program you're using, but it isn't blender. That UI hasnt' changed since .5, appraoching 8 years go.
