So I guess the gimmick of this is some open world survival (blegh) dark fantasy? More informative trailer/teaser wouldn't hurt.
seems to me it's a complete redoing of the first game. which is excellent when it comes to atmosphere.
yep, it's more of a remake than an actual sequel. the original was absolutely hellish in every way, a game has never generated such a strong sense of dread in me while also managing to keep me hooked. here's hoping they manage to keep that up with pathologic 2. admittedly they aren't doing the greatest job when it comes to promoting pathologic 2, as unless you've played the first one, the only thing you see is the admittedly monotonous gameplay. you really have to be experienced with the first game to get an idea of what exactly the game is about. to break it down, you play as a plague doctor and your task is to cure the town of the plague. however, while doing this you also have to manage your own resources and fight for your own survival. the gameplay itself is pretty standard survival stuff, but the main attraction is the surreal atmosphere and the storytelling. the characters are written so that they will purposefully make absolutely no sense until you spend the time to become acquainted with the town, and how their way of life generally is. the first couple days start off slow and relatively easy, but right off the bat you will get that feeling that something just ain't quite right. the ingame economy fluctuates depending on the severity of ongoing events, and the first thing you'll notice is you'll have to get really creative with how you'll afford your daily bread. i fucking love pathologic, and i am absolutely certain i am not doing a good enough job at selling it, but it is easily one of my favourite games because of its approach to psychological horror. it's such a mentally taxing game to play, but the feeling you get once its all over is unrivaled
When I preordered Pathologic 2, I thought that by the time it released I would have finished the original. Two years later and I'm not even close to being done. Pathologic is really a fun game with cool writing and an amount of jank that is more endearing that annoying, but half of it is just walking. I wish it had a sprint button or something, and the days were slightly shorter.
also an important thing to note is that you're working on a constant time limit. stuff happens independently of you and if you're not there to do something, the plot will change to account for it. so curing the plague isn't just about doing quests, you have to actually look out for the townspeople and make a real difference. and at the end of every day you get told how many people died and how many days you have left to cure the plague. it's not unlike Deus Ex in that you probably won't even realize you could have saved X character, or that Y event was an actual thing that happened in the game-world and you could have witnessed.
you'll reach a point where you wished the days were longer just so you could have enough time to finish all of your daily quests and relax for a bit
No, no, I understand that the days are tailored for you to do stuff, it's just that if you were slightly faster they could be slightly shorter without changing the overall time economy of the game.
Man this looks like it doubles down on the stellar atmosphere of Pathologic and then makes the gameplay slightly less of a soul draining chore. I can only hope that a single playthrough of one of the characters doesn't take 40 or so hours this time though cause that's a bit excessive imo. I also hope they keep my favorite quote from the first game, "And there these war mongrels were... when I saw them, I knew our cake was dough"
holy shit, pathologic this game got me acclimated to pushing through janky hidden gems. I'm so hyped for this, I thought I'd never see it again.
I wonder how the game's translation will be. I hear there were a lot of Russian idioms and phrases that could just not be directly translated to English in the first one, and even in some character names too. I take it the script will probably be fairly re-written.
the original translation was really bad, but the classic hd remaster fixed it up a huge ton so it's actually fully understandable now
There's only one line i want to be kept unchanged and it starts with "simon" and ends with "is a sorcerer"
Fuck yeah. I hope the soundtrack is as weird and fascinating to listen to as is the first game's. https://youtu.be/H6R8bZUUDno
