Cows would've died eventually anyway. They're so domesticated that 'wild living' is a lost concept.
Depends on the breed of the cow. The remaining older breeds are perfectly happy spending their entire lives, including winter, out on a pasture, but modern dairy/meat cows are usually much more fickle beasts.
It's usually breeds that are less domesticated and have horns or traits that are closer to Aurochs that best live out in the wild.
You'll find them in less developed countries and hardy locations.
