Without watching the video; because they're very hard to leave, have a strict control on counter information and have loads of children. Now to watch and see how correct I was.
If it was too long a summary of the contents are as follows. Strict religions tend to "cost" a lot more than more encompassing lenient religions. Meaning they either need donations either monetarily or time wise that make it easy to "see" their devotion, they are hard symbols of being a part of the religion. Due to their strictness a lot of practitioners tend to easily find purpose with their lives, because of this these people tend to be a lot happier and not depressed. The cost is so great to these people to weed out the "free-riders" that would rather skim as much as THEY can FROM the religion rather than helping the community at large. These strict religions work because the entire community works TOGETHER instead of for themselves. They share their resources with one another rather than allowing the community to fall apart due to greed. Religious rituals tend to give the community at large a greater sense of connection, especially through the suffering of another to prove their faith. People understand sacrifice and pain and thus they understand what that person is doing something that "costs" a lot. Therefore, that person understand the consequences and have stronger self control. Abstaining from hedonistic pursuits means the people have more time to work together and build a better future for themselves and their communities. Because of this, these people connect more on a personal level and their cohesion is akin to a family (or rather what a family should be) increasing participation within the group. Leaving is only difficult because the outside world is usually difficult for people to integrate into, i.e. The Amish allow their people to go into the world when they are 18, then they are given an ultimatum. They may leave to live their lives apart from their former community and never return, or stay after they have seen the world knowing what they are missing. While many people believe thinking this way is crazy, but personally I believe when people are given too many choices and analysis paralysis sets in; having constraints put in place helps a person find their way. I agree with the presenter that this stuff is morally neutral, and sure it works but at the cost of freedom... Ionno. TL;DR: Strict religions bring people together because they understand the costs of living how they do, thus they work together more because they understand the consequences of not cooperating.
