• Today on "things we don't need": Gawker to return in 2019 under new ownership

Going to just link the the cached article, because Variety had the the fucking gall to make the disingenuous statement that "Gawker was sued into bankruptcy by Peter Thiel." What a bunch of shit. Gawker was sued into bankruptcy by Hulk Hogan, and rightfully so. Doesn't matter one iota that Peter Thiel bankrolled the case - it wasn't his name on the lawsuit, it was Hulk's. Anyway: https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:09f2w5CeIzYJ:https://variety.com/2018/digital/news/gawker-2019-relaunch-bryan-goldberg-1202936710/+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us Gawker will rise from the ashes in a new iteration of the website to be launched next year, Variety has learned. The reborn Gawker comes under the ownership of Bryan Goldberg, founder and CEO of Bustle Digital Group, who was the winning bidder for the remaining assets of Gawker Media in July.Goldberg paid $1.35 million for the media gossip blog, which has been dormant for over two years after Gawker Media was sued into bankruptcy by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel. In a memo to Bustle staff Tuesday obtained by Variety, Goldberg said he has hired Amanda Hale as the new publisher of Gawker. Based in New York, Hale most recently was chief revenue officer of The Outline, the culture website founded by Joshua Topolsky (who previously worked at Bloomberg Media and The Verge) that recently laid off one-fourth of its staff. Goldberg is targeting the Gawker relaunch for early 2019. “We won’t recreate Gawker exactly as it was, but we will build upon Gawker’s legacy and triumphs — and learn from its missteps,” he wrote in the memo. “In so doing, we aim to create something new, vibrant, highly relevant, and worth visiting daily.” Yeah, what a great legacy. Nick Denton would have totally posted a child's sex tape as long as the kid was over 4 years old. And yet he had the fucking arrogance to approve an article that lambasted Bob FUCKING Woodward, of all people, as an unreliable journalist.
pretty much all of gawker media is still around, it was just gawker itself that went under with everything else being bought by univision and reformed as gizmodo media
the name needed to fucking die, don't these idiots understand that?
They're talking about Gawker's legacy like its a good thing, so no, definitely not. They're not alone - there are people to this day that still think Gawker was a bastion of thoughtful journalism (lol), and that it's death at the hands of Hulk Hogan a venture capitalist supervillain would set a terrible precedent that would eventually destroy american journalism in its entirety. (double lol)
Looks like it's time for a rematch. Bring in the Hulkster to give 'em some hurt.
But why tho
It is notable Peter Thiel bankrolled it. I hate Gawker as much as any sane person, but I don't quite get OPs objection.
Gawker used to be my go to site for posting news on FP. They put alot of interesting news(aside the celeb tabloid bullshit) on one place which makes it easy.
You're right, it is notable that someone else who was adversely affected by Gawker's absolutely terrible journalism would be there to fund it's demise.
The case should never have needed a billionaire to fund it. In any case, he couldn't have killed Gawker with all the money in the world if Gawker hadn't done what they did.
