I don't find it surprisingly quite frankly, it was fought in 1957, alot of countries used torture back then and still do.

We've known about this for decades. I thought France had owned up to it. What's the story behind the lack of acknowledgement? Was it just something never brought up or was it more serious with actual attempts to suppress info on the war?
How is France's colonialism taught in schools? Do french kids grow up learning about the first Indochina war like how American kids grow up learning about the Viet Nam war?
the only thing i know about the war's perception in France is that time Jean-Marie Le Pen got BTFO for saying it was defamation to publish the evidence of the war crimes he committed there, and it backfired and got him conclusively ruled as a war criminal in the french supreme court
The Algerian War was an extremely touchy subject for many years, and had a pretty massive effect on France itself culturally. It single-handedly led to the collapse of the "Fourth Republic" and the subsequent political domination of Charles De Gaulle(who was already rather revered within France for his actions during WW2). Due to the troubles with Algeria, De Gaulle would continue the process of the de-colonization of France. So basically, due to all this I'd imagine French politicians simply ignored the entire event altogether over the years, including their actual actions during the war. I doubt any serious attempts to suppress their actions were taken since the people in charge following the crisis weren't particularly the ones that perpetuated the war.
