With the Pope making a dog whistle suggestion that Satan was to blame for exposing many church officials' crimes, I'm not sure I trust him.
I'm including the Snopes article regarding what I am talking about because there's some sensationalism in how it has been repoted:

I guess it goes to show that no matter how good a Pope tries to behave or whatever their core beliefs are, it's just a bad idea to have one individual be considered the ultimate authority in religious matters.
Nobody actually believed that the pope, leader of the Catholic church was actually suddenly a good, relatable person, right? It's obviously a charade to try and distract from the ridiculous amount of shit that the church had themselves in before he was made pope.
I think it's mainly the contrast, in that he wasn't anti-gay, said people are better off being atheists than fake Christians and not being anti-condom. He's also a believer in Climate Change. He's nowhere near perfect, but he's so much better than the last pope still.
I think that giving the Catholic church any credit at all is a gigantic mistake.
I'm an ardent atheist, and I'm not really giving credit, just saying things are less shitty than they were. I'm glad that they're not anti-condom anymore, at least not at the highest echelon - imagine how many have died due to that decision to tell people condoms increase chances of contracting HIV?
This is comparable to how Neo-Nazis were exposing the crimes of Feminists in an effort to discredit them. Sure, they were committing crimes, but you're still trying to push an agenda.
