Sometimes I wish our politics was this unhinged. Over here, our politicians act sensibly, but they still do the same awful things, so it'd be nice to at least get some humour and entertainment value out of it.

I suppose that's fair - I was in America (NYC) in 2007 on holiday and the fucking adverts for pharmaceuticals were bad enough. Prescription only drugs are banned from being marketed to consumers here. If I hated that, I can't imagine what a constant barrage of this shit is like.
Oh you're about the same place, it just isn't as obvious. All the NSA systems and such came from the UK, and despite a court ruling that it's all illegal, nothing's being done about it and it's actively getting worse. and that's just the tip of the iceberg with a dressing of normalcy on it.
That's what I was saying though. Our politicians do stuff that's just as bad regularly, but they put a smooth administrative face on it.

The Tories have cut the NHS' budget in real terms, so I'm well aware of how politicians negatively impact the lives of constituents. Politicians in the UK are just as sociopathic and cruel as American politicians, just with a veneer of sophistication. In some ways, it actually makes things worse, because politicians' evil streak is less clear.
No the UK developed it and shared tech with and advised the US on developing their own. There's also junk like five eyes/echalon that's a global array of data sharing, where all the systems are linked to a certain degree and other such horrors. Tempora was built with help from the NSA/xkey etc. It's all essentially one very tightly knit system in the end.
