I use to listen to a version of this song by the Smithereens when I was way younger, but I mainly did it because I was an edgy pre-teen who learned about the song.
Either way it's a really interesting story for a song.
It's probably a mixture of both things. A happy person would obviously not kill themselves after listening to Gloomy Sunday, however it may have enough of a melancholic kick to push someone over the edge who was miserable to begin with.
It's not impossible to write a musical composition that is too emotionally intense for mentally unwell people, however at the same time there were probably songs that caused way more suicides than gloomy sunday that do not have the infamy because there wasn't such a weird tracked correlation and no one examined it.
There were probably plenty of people who committed suicide after playing Clare De Lune or possibly even Moonlight Sonata.
The name "Gloomy Sunday" is probably part of the reason why it became infamous, given how insidiously melancholic of a title it is.
