Sony's relentlessly adorable Aibo robot is finally ready to return to American shores. After months of waiting, you can pre-order a First Litter Edition of the robo-pup in the US ahead of an expected mid-December ship date. You'll be spending a staggering $2,900 to play with the limited-run mechanical canine. The kit includes everything you'll need to get started, however -- you'll get a bone (sorry, aibone), a pink ball, paw pads and three years of AI cloud service to help Aibo learn.

and suddenly it's the early 2000s again
Is this the one where you have to routinely buy dogfood DLC or it'll automatically die?
nah you buy cloud storage or your dog becomes lobotimized
I remember wanting this thing as an early teenager, I was such a spoiled pizza shit back then.
God I remember the original, I used to have a sort of knock off one called an i-Cybie. I forgot how fucking loud the motors were.

We're never gonna find aliens, they're gonna find us, and we'll have replaced everything with robots. Dogs, cats, fish, zoo animals, extinct animals, and ourselves. It will be one giant robot planet.
But no batteries
That's so cute. I remember wanting a Aibo, but also knew they were way too expensive so I asked for a simpler robot dog.
I still have it, because I loved it as a child.

We're getting closer to that bear from the movie AI.
On top of the ginormous price tag, there's this bullshit on top after the 3-year "subscription" has expired:
Your aibo robotic dog includes 3 years of Cloud and Wireless Services necessary to take advantage of aibo’s full functionality and learning capabilities.
After the 3 year period you will be responsible for any periodic fees to continue the Wireless Service (if offered) pursuant to a separate agreement between you and a third-party service provider and use of the Cloud Service (if offered) may also be subject to a period fee as set forth in a separate agreement.
Screw that.
The recent trend of physical-products-as-a-service with a side of shady-ass data collection that the customer pays for marks everything that's wrong with the contemporary tech industry.
