Hello everybody,
First, some disclaimers to set the tone!
-This is not a commercial logo competition in which the final logo chosen will actually be used for anything, I would put some money on the line if that was the case. This is meant to be a creative / inspiration exercise with some structure given to help in the process.
-THE LOGO CHOSEN WILL NOT BE USED FOR ANYTHING, unless you choose to use it yourself for whatever reason. Portfolios and what not.
-This is not something where you should worry about producing the most perfect logo ever which you spent 50+ hours developing. Let the creative juices flow and have fun!
-You will not be required to edit your entry / entries in order to win the competition or after the competition, but people may make suggestions on how you could improve them and you are allowed to update them, but make sure to post it to a new post so I know its been changed.
-This IS just a fun excuse for you to try your hand at making something to a design brief and seeing what others come up with.
This IS hopefully a friendly and supportive way to practice your skills and get some feedback. I will try to give some comments here and there personally, though I won't enter the competition.
A winner will be chosen, but the prize is solely pride and 250 face-coins.
THE COMPETITION WILL END IN 1 WEEK (September 25, 2018).
I’ll extend it if there aren't any entries (sad face).
On to the competition brief!
-Your goal is to design a logo for the following client. It is up to you whether it will be an image with type, or just type, but if it is just type, it should probably be stylized somewhat.
-You can make multiple entries.
-You can design other elements that demonstrate or support your logo idea to help everyone to understand what you are thinking. Patterns, mock-ups, other brand elements, etc. if you feel like it.
For this competition, your fictional client is:
Lighthouse Press – (This is a name that is
already in use by a real company, but the one described here is fictional, it
is hard to find a name not already being used).
“Lighthouse Press is an independent book publisher that specializes in textbooks for post-secondary use (college, university, etc.). They also publish non-fiction books, essays, and lectures by a small selection of academics from around the world. They have recently modernized their catalogue and allow student access to digital versions of their entire archive through subscriptions or library partnerships. They are open to expansion into other subject matter, but their primary field of publishing is: History.
This company is based in London, UK, but one of their leading visions is to promote history that is not west or east centric, an objective global history. They would like their logo to be something that is significant or understood world-wide.
Their name, Lighthouse Press, has significance to the owner in two ways: it references the lighthouse near to his birthplace in Wales, and also the Lighthouse of Alexandria where the Great Library was located in ancient times.
Lighthouse Press is mainly a publisher, but has opened a single retail store in London from which they sell their non-fiction books, essays, etc. This store also hosts small lectures and similar events. Lighthouse Press would like to expand this aspect of their brand at some point in the future, and host larger academic events. Though they aren’t sure how it will affect the logo design process, the client wants a brand that can be used for TED talk style events in the future.
Apart from the above information, Lighthouse Press suggests that the logo should work well at small size since it will mainly be printed on the spines of books, but also one which has impact at large scale (on banners, projections, or signs – for instance, behind a keynote speaker).
They are adamant that there logo should not use the standard tropes of history or publishing, they want a logo that is modern and represents their progressive vision for education and knowledge. They say that the logo could focus on those words, education and knowledge, rather than “books and history.”
The owners specify that the colour palette could be one way to reference elements of history without using generic symbols. They are open to most colours, but would like to avoid the colour red, since their nearest competitor uses that colour.
The last comment the owner gives is that the logo should not be simply a Lighthouse. They would like to see something which references a lighthouse in a unique way, or stylizes it uniquely.”
Let’s see what you can come up with!
If you feel you need some more information, ask and I’ll make an update to the post.
If this competition is successful and people enjoy it, then maybe I'll try to improve it a bit with some judges other than myself and a better prize.
Nothing to particularly interesting or good about mine, just had the idea of replacing the beams of light with the Wi-Fi symbol and went with it

Hey, thanks for entering Ruby_Axe! It is looking like you might win by default :P

One thing I noticed that most publishers have a logo that can be printed using a single color, so I tried to make mine work like that.
Not sure about the font choice though.
Logo typeface: Gotham Book
Mockup credits: 1 , 2 , 3
By the way, mad props for the effort put into this thread, you did a fantastic job with the brief.
Great job @Kecske ! Simple, bold, and with a clever & modern twist on a couple of historic symbols. The mock-ups do a great job of giving a sense of realism to the brand as a whole. I especially appreciate the type pairing: a light font with the clean bold circle. Really nice work.
Though the line work is fairly typical to modern trends, I believe that it somewhat resembles an older style of drawing (engraving / wood carving, etc.) and makes sense to me.
The choice to make the background the main solid element works very effectively as well in making something stand out on small applications or complicated backgrounds.
"The client" would have one suggestion / critique. Their books are largely used in college settings. College kids are not as mature as you might expect and spend a lot of class time doodling, not paying attention, etc. They are slightly worried that the two humps at the base of the lighthouse reinforce a "phallic" look to the logo and they are worried that students / others might realize this and tarnish the brand slightly with silly social media posts. They really don't want to get a nickname or to become a meme among students. They wonder whether a single hump, or possibly a wave shape might work better?
(Again, you don't need to change anything, this is just one critique from the client perspective.)
I'm swamped with a large project at the moment so if I finish it I might give it a shot. I like the idea for the thread but I think maybe more time in between might work better.
Ya, I agree, but I figured I'd start with one week and see how many people expressed interest. Deadline can be adjusted, and since there are only two entries so far, I likely will push it back another week or so.
I'm so incredibly new to Illustrator so please excuse the shoddy vectoring haha. Anyway I didn't want to go with the typical lighthouse silhouette so I decided to look up the Library of Alexandria and try and replicate that shape to give it I guess a historical feel but with a modern twist in terms of the linework? I wasn't confident enough to attempt colouring but I have included a few variations of text placement.

Complete with it being small af and not vector
I just saw this thread and decide to use the little time I had to mess around
Sorry! Maybe next time
Haha, no problem! Thanks for participating. Gives some background to the company and... maybe a reason they need a new logo? (No offence).
Wow thats a lot of coins...
Thank you for your kind words Smeetin, and once again for the effort! As I never did work like this in a professional manner, it was fun to try myself out as an imaginary designer with an actual task at hand.
Both your and the clients comments were appreciated, although I kind of got caught up in some uni related stuff, and didn't get around to update my submission. As for the line work, I agree that it is rather conventional, which was mostly because of me playing it safe due to my limited experience with Illustrator.
And I guess librarians will forever curse me for encouraging so many balls to be drawn on their books...
I do have one suggestion though: if you decide to do another competition like this in the future, you perhaps you could ask Hezzy if he could help advertising it somehow across the forums. I'm sure there are plenty of talented folks around here, who simply for some reason never found this thread.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
