Today, we are excited to announce that we are bringing back the original PlayStation experience in a new miniaturized version – PlayStation Classic! The console will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles, including fan-favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.
Available for pre-order at select retailers across the US and CAN, each unit will also come with an HDMI cable to connect to their TV, a USB cable, and two controllers for local multiplayer within compatible titles. PlayStation Classic will be available for $99.99 USD (MSRP) / $129.99 CAN (MSRP) on December 3, 2018
Yawn.
The video features €/Yen price, so not a US/CA only thing
"When we've dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much. That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?" - Jim Ryan, Sony’s head of global sales and marketing.
Are companies not allowed to change their business strategy when it becomes clear that there is significant demand for a particular style of product?
*proceeds to sell ps2 games on the store with okay-to-mediocre-to-awful emulation*
u asked we listened
"You don't want that. You think you do, but you don't."
Say what you will but my consumerist bitch ass is picking one of these up a-fucking-SAP
"*AC adaptor sold separately"
What a joke.
The fact that the controller isn't a dual shock already shoots this in the foot.
They're just copying Nintendo on that front. I presume it's USB-powered.
Awesome.
I was gonna buy PS1 last week but checked prices and it's around 50-60 Euro mark.
Might as well wait and get one of these.
Also tracked down Team Buddies and it's on sale for 190 Euro so I guess gonna have to get that.
Nintendo just barely scrapped by when they pulled this with the N3DS but I don't expect Sony being so lucky
I still use my old PS1 for playing music CD's and that sweet visualizer (thanks POS4), but I have to admit this looks cute with that form factor.
However, who's bright idea was it to not make analog controllers for this release? Can't wait for the definitive Playstation Classic experience without Ape Escape!
Sony has been pushing ""remasters"" for years in with varying success rates, they know full well they have a starved fanbase they can throw under the bus for a few dollars.
For some reason, the emulated PS1 and PS2 games on PS3 are much better than the ones on PS4. At least, I've played multiple PS1 and PS2 games on my PS3, all downloaded through PSN, and I have had no issues.
It probably won't have Metal Gear Solid. Considering the popularity of that game rivals FFVII, they would have advertised with it.
Though I hope it will have relatively weak protection against putting more games on, and I also hope someone will figure out how to connect a PS4 controller or something.

Depends on the PS3 model, since some early ones have physical PS2 components to make emulation trivial while the PS4 is pure emulation afaik.
God Damn, it honestly makes me kinda mad that Sony got so far ahead of this generation by parading themselves around as "consumer friendly", and now that they're in the lead they just do the most obnoxious anti-consumer bullshit possible. NEVER give a corporation an inch because they'll bleed you dry and laugh in your face.
I'm wary about this.
The games they're leading with are kind of underwhelming. I mean maybe this is huge for you if you're a big fan of Tekken and Jumping Flash, but I would hope for a couple more heavy hitters in the announcement. Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Oddworld, Silent Hill, Tomb Raider, so on.
I mean I get that they probably want to not spoil everything right away but I'd have liked to hear a couple more of the real heavy hitters that are gonna be on this. The fact that they call it pre-loaded does give me hope that there will be a store for getting more games, but that also probably means they're gonna save all the really good stuff so you have to buy it.
These mini consoles so far have been kind of disappointing really, they're well presented but they tend to be a few classics mixed in with a lot of stocking stuffers. Like how the NES classic doesn't have Castlevania 3 but it does have fucking, Balloon Fight. So far on the SNES and SNES minis you've been able to just dump all the roms on them but who knows if that'll be as possible with the PS Classic.
Also, one thing I would really really hope for is graphical enhancements. Most PS1 games are in my opinion best played with a significantly higher resolution and texture warping fixes and if that isn't possible with this then you might as well just emulate instead since the presentation won't outweigh the graphical tradeoff.
Because the PS1 and 2 games had natural hardware and emulation on the PS3, to the point that even on the slims and up to date, fully firmware updated models, you can swap almost any PS1 disc into your system and it'll run just fine. Though the PS2 hardware was removed in later models since it was part of the backdoor access for cracking systems open that also involved Linux and other shit. Still, the system was born with backwards compatibility in mind. PS4 just sort of chucked all that out a damn window and they've had their priorities on streaming services and other ideas to make people pay out the ass for arbitrary reasons while half-assing the PS2 emulation on the select (and expensive) titles they put up.
Fuck Sony this generation, man. Good exclusives doesn't justify PS+ and raising the prices, nor throwing everyone under the bus for extra cash.
Yep I have a Slim, without the PS2 hardware. Everything works fine.
600 dollar MSRP
don't you forget it
My PS3 is pure emulation because it's a Slim.
With only 20 titles it will be missing so many classic games. Im hoping for parasite eve 2 but theyll probably put resident evil on it and leave out any other horror games.
The system comes with a USB cable for power. Most people already have USB power adaptors and using power from the TV could be a possibility.
In theory I'm excited about this, but if they don't announce better games for it in the future I don't think I will give Ashutosh when it comes out. Tekken 3 is good, but I don't have any attachment to the other games.
Riiiiidddggggeeee Raaaccccceeerrrrr!!!!
Metal Gear Solid or Bust
can we start going forward in time now?
