Vita to stop production in 2019, No replacement planned

PS Vita will be manufactured until 2019 in Japan and there are currently no plans for a successor, Sony Interactive Entertainment senior vice president Hiroyuki Oda told Famitsu at Tokyo Game Show 2018.

Well, farewell to the honestly more interesting of Sony's two Gen8 systems.

Can't say this wasn't a long time coming, though; Sony screwed the pooch hard with Vita. They had the potential to build upon the PSP's TV-out and beat Nintendo to the punch on Switch by a good five years. Instead, they ended up having to get rid of excess stock by bundling 'em with PS4s, trying to make it PS4's equivalent to the Wii U GamePad in the same "Nintendo's thing but for TrU GaMrRrRrZ" stunt they pulled with PSMove against the Wii. Not that PS4 needed help against the Wii U, much to my chagrin.

But still, I feel sorry for Vita.

The Vita coulda been great, If it didn't have those stupid potrietry memory card, MUCH better support and maybe even had some kind of phone functions (would have looked stupid using it but the thing could take a simcard) then it would have done much better.

Kinda weird how Sony just let it drop within a year of it existing outside of Japan.

I liked my Vita but when Sony dropped it, so did I. Sold it and haven't missed it at all since then.

Last I had a vita it was fully modded and someone has made a micro sd adapter, but because the thing has no games I sold it and got a PSP.

All they had to do was drop the stupid memory card for SD cards and it would of sold like hotcakes. I bought a used Vita for PS4 screen share thing while I was out of town. I could barely install one game on the 16gb card that came with it

Just a tip for anyone with a vita; if you download the youtube app, you can play gameplay videos of games
and then you can pretend your vita actually has games 😑

I'd rather just have a cheap PSP also the memory card adapter wasn't out when I had my Vita and my PSP fits in my pocket better and plays all the PSP and PSX games no problems.

If you've got a Vita and it isn't updated the the latest firmware 3.69 you can fully mod it, including using an SD card. It's pretty easy too as the process has been pretty much automated at this point.
The Youtube app doesn't work on the vita anymore, making this even more sad.

Did Sony ever admit to fucking this up? There was a lot wrong with the PSP but if they let people use SD cards, they may have been forgiven. There are so many untranslated """visual novels""" I'll never get to """play"""

You can with Chocolate Doom which supports Hexen ect too, you can also run Quake 1 & 2
