You'd think there would be more of a push to fix the severe deficits in the _literally every aspect of the American government_ but then dark money
why fix today what you can put off for the next congress. In the 90s the newt congress declared that the government should not be in the business of buying and selling helium, something that is increadibly precious of a resource and we had essentially the only supply of in the world, so they passed a law dumping it on the market. Years passed and every now and then someone would get worried because the supply was edging closer and closer to empty, nobody cared. Finally we ran out of this enormous supply that would have taken hundreds of years to use up, and then the shortages happened. See since the 90s, new medical equipment with liquid helium chilled magnets and all sorts of other uses were discovered, and foolishly we ignored it. Thankfully the fracking boom happened to find some more but we still don't get that this thing will not be around forever if we waste it and don't protect our supply of it
