Since users here are from all around the world, I figured that, in the same vein as Picture of You, we could share pictures from our city/region/country.
I'll start: I currently live in Fontainebleau, a town which is a 1 hour drive from Paris. It's a pretty touristy place during the summer, and its inhabitants are generally very wealthy. It's where the Chateau de Fontainebleau, which was the home of King François 1er and Napoléon among others. It's also surrounded by a large forest, if you're a fan of trekking.

i actually move out in a couple days, and while i don't have many pictures of the actual town itself as i don't find it all that interesting or picturesque, i do have a bunch of pictures of places i've taken walks around here. these ones are from april.

i'm gonna have to find some good places to take walks around my new place. i give my town a lot of shit but it does have a few nice areas.
I strongly approve of this thread. I don't live in a place as cool, but I'll try to keep it interesting.
I live in Quiévrain, a town in Belgium at the border with France. The town has always profited from its geographical location, and 100 years ago, it used to be a bustling, wealthy town. Over the first half of the 20th century, the whole region was home to many coal mines that contributed heavily to the Belgian economy.

There's a reason why I'm posting those old photos. The town has gone to shit, so I'm not going to post any recent pictures. The town hall, the big building on the left in the second picture, has been demolished for no reason. My dad lives right next to the "castle" in the third picture, but it's also only a matter of time. The entire region has become quite poor ever since all the coal mines closed down in the mid-20th century, but things are slowly looking up.
Not far from here though is an immemorial place, a beautiful wood that has remained mostly unperturbed by the passage of time, with a gorgeous water stream coursing along its tree-covered rocky hills.

There are even a few caves around (closed to the public since they're rumored to be quite deadly), but the most striking place in those woods is without a doubt the so-called "caillou qui bique".
http://www.visitmons.be/sites/visitmons/files/styles/gallery_lightbox/public/content/images/hautspays_091.jpg?itok=CAOx0aFH
A huge rock formation that looks like a man's head, looking up. Can you see it? "Caillou qui bique" is a very archaic way to say just that ("rock looking up"). Legend has it that it's the devil who was turned to stone, I forgot the exact story.
Not far from my town, there's also the town of Saint-Ghislain, and its train station.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e2/2009-06-08_sncb_gare_Saint_Ghislain.jpg/1200px-2009-06-08_sncb_gare_Saint_Ghislain.jpg
It's actually a rather usual-looking station for this region (dating from the time when the region thrived on coal), but there's a funny story about this station. During World War II, the Germans tried very hard to disrupt train traffic, and since this station was one of the biggest around, they used heavy artillery to try to destroy it. What's funny is that they failed hard, and hit literally everything else around it instead. The town was left half in ruins by the time they were driven off. The town stayed in a bad shape for decades, but over the years, has managed to completely rebuild and is now an okay place again.
Other than that, the closest interesting place in the region is the town of Mons, the capital city of the province.
http://www.wanderersblues.be/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Panorama-Mons.jpg
From the Latin "mons" meaning "hill" or "mountain", you can guess where the city was built. A town dating back to the Middle-Ages that has withstood quite a few battles throughout history. Nowadays it's a "university town", and it's where I studied and worked.

See the town hall on the left? It's hard to see it from there, but there's a small monkey statue on the front.

They say that patting the monkey on its head will give you good luck. I may or may not have my life completely messed and turned around because of this, superstitious as it sounds.
Yeah, that's it. That's where I live. It's okay I guess.
I live in Liège, one of the 10 biggest cities in Belgium with a population of 135,000. First important city to resist Germany, first to be targetted by V1 and V2 rockets and has the longest stairs in the world. Our train station appeared briefly in Guardians of the Galaxy too. We also have many buildings dating back to the 17th Century still standing. Right outside is the Ardenne, a densely forested area that was the battlefield of many european wars.

I lived there for 6 months last year! Those stairs are a bitch to climb, I don't understand how people manage to live right in the middle of them.
This has got to be the worst city to do a diet in haha, I think I gained 5kg over the course of my internship. The beer, the fries, and the desserts... I think I ate boulets liégeois every other day. I loved the chocolate-filled waffles at Pollux. I also had special offers at Galler thanks to my company, so everytime I went home for a weekend I bought 30€ worth of chocolate.
I lost most of my pictures from back then when I got my phone stolen but I managed to salvage a few:
