Mr Nikolaev first proposed an Ice Age Park with mammoths in 2014. He added: “Everyone laughed then. But they’re not laughing now.” I'm gonna be honest, the next ten years is a bit too optimistic. I'm sure we'll make tons of progress but I don't have that much faith in this endeavour. But who knows, I'm not a fucking expert.
It won't be the science stopping it, it will be religious and animal rights activists in the government preventing this from happening. The arguement over stem cell and cloning ethics with animals will hold this back.
Too bad in 10 years global warming probably will make it pretty fucking expensive to have an "ice age park".
Just shave the mammoths
no, just make the regular elephants slightly hairier and glue longer tusks to them.
Well maybe they could inseminate a genetically similar animal (elephant) with the DNA
Wouldn't they have to be hermetically sealed off from everything so they don't catch the common cold and then die instantly?
Perhaps the reverse is the problem. Woolly mammoths are immune to all of our diseases and instead spread horrifying viruses that make people go through a slow and agonizing transformation that turns them into small flesh eating mammoths. The reason why neanderthals hunted them down is to defend themselves from the humanoid mammoths.
Well, they actually could harbor retroviruses, couldn't they?
I am not fully positive how DNA cloning works in this regard. The mummies of the dead ones probably could but I don't really know if the retroviruses get cloned as the DNA does.
“Everyone laughed then. But they’re not laughing now.” has anyone who wasn't a super villain ever said this note: todd is a super villain don't say him
I'm guessing no because they'd be born through a surrogate elephant and gain their immunity.
I am no sciencing professional man so I could be very wrong, but if it were possible to clone mammoths, could we not clone endangered elephants instead?
wouldn't an ice age park be a dumb idea in the face of Global Warming?
Bringing an entire species back from extension so we can have dumb children make funny faces at them and keep them trapped in a cage
I think (just going off of these types of articles here) the way it works is they're editing a modern elephant relative to have the same traits through insertion of genes from the preserved mammoth. in anycase its still got to have some elephant incubate and birth it.
I'm gonna start a woolly mammoth farm and make a living selling hippy ponchos made from their fur.
Well, we mostly got somatic cell cloning down, DNA sequencing is also good and I'm sure they'll have enough samples for a complete genome. The problem seems to be how to prepare DNA for cloning. CRISPR the shit out of a decayed sample?
No need to clone endangered elephants, just have a capture breeding program, it will probably more genetically viable. The reason we'd bother with cloning in the first place with mammoths is because we don't actually have any live mammoths to breed.
Humanoid mammoths, does it mean we get to fuck it?
I could have sworn DNA had a pretty limited half-life. Perhaps by splicing animals together they could recreate mammoths, but drawing DNA from the remains? I don't know.
I remember reading something about this park that they plan on reintroducing the Mammoths to. It was an experiment to help recreate the Mammoth steppes that used to exist 12-15,000 years ago. Some were suggesting if they recreate this ecosystem in Siberia, it could help push back against climate change.

With global warming heating the planet up might as well skip the mammoths and bring back the cold blooded reptiles.
Half life is around 521 years at 13°C and upper limit of readability of 1.5 billion years at -5°C. https://www.nature.com/news/dna-has-a-521-year-half-life-1.11555 Though there is stuff like postmortem mutations too

lmao they are making "Ice Age Village" into a real thing https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/134229/a5bc79b6-3f7e-42d3-9f32-768ff529ddcf/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/134229/c3407bb3-0b78-4435-a925-97350195f65e/image.png
Pretty sure I was still learning my times tables when I heard the first "we gonna bring em back" news article. Every year or so someone says they are going to do it but so far no one has, I get that its possible but until someone actually goes and does it, its going to remain a science fiction clickbait title.
just a reminder; i read this exact same headline in like, 2001. Well, its 2018. Nothing happened and they're not even close. If It were as simple as he wants it to be, the technique would already be being used to produce breeding pairs for endangered and possibly recently extinct species and subspecies. Animals that have far less challenges to survive than something that was alive in the fucking ice age.
