Activision and Netflix look to be pulling together a team to develop an animated series based on Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo series, at least according to a now-deleted tweet from a
possible writer on the project.
If everything falls into place, this would see Diablo join the animated Castlevania series in Netflix’s library of game-inspired content and adds another notable franchise to the growing
list of games being picked up for TV and film adaptations.
Andrew Cosby, Hellboy writer and founder of the comic publisher Boom! Studios, tweeted yesterday that he is in final talks to sign on as the showrunner and writer for an otherwise
unannounced Diablo animated series on Netflix. The tweet has since been deleted, but the folks at BloodyDisgusting were able to grab the text before Cosby removed the tweet.
“I guess I can confirm I am indeed in final talks to write and show-run the new Diablo animated series for Activision and Netflix,” read Cosby’s now-deleted Tweet.
“It’s very exciting and I hope to the High Heavens it all works out.”
If it is anywhere near as good as the Castlevania series, I look forward to it.
modern diablo writing has already set the bar of expectations so low, so at least this can't possibly be worse
The diablo books(yes there are books) are great, generally.
Could be interesting, Diablo has great lore, but diablo 3 took a shit on it with Saturday morning cartoon villains
I haven't played a whole lot of Blizzard games, but I feel this gut feeling applies
Could be interesting, _insert Blizzard series hare_ has great lore, but _insert newest title in series_ took a shit on it with Saturday morning cartoon _insert any aspect of plot_
There better be a cow level.
Give me a StarCraft one instead
Some of the Starcraft and Warcraft ones where good too as well.
Blizzard just writes overaly cliche characters and lines these days. Other writers have been using their IP to write better stuff for a while now.
so are we going to get a dramatic thoughtful explanation as to why the hero of diablo jammed the soul shard into his forehead and got possessed by diablo after just defeating diablo and removing the soul shard from the prince's forehead where he had jammed it and been possessed by diablo?
no it's genuinely that way with diablo 3,they made the act bosses literally talk to you constantly, the entire way through the act to beat them. imagine going into a tower with 5 floors, and there's a bad guy at the top of the floor, except everytime you halfway progress through a floor, he holograms next to you and goes
"HAHA PUNY MORTAL YOU MAY HAVE WON THIS BATTLE BUT MORE IS STILL TO COME HAHA I'M NOT THROUGH WITH YOU YET HAHA"
and then once you beat the first floor
"HAHA PUNY WEAKLING THAT WAS JUST THE FIRST FLOOR, MY EVIL DEMONS ARE WAITING FOR YOU IN THE FLOOR ABOVE HAHA"
because that's azmodan for the entirety of act 3
I'm a huge fan of the Hellboy comics so my hopes are high.
diablo 3 was garbage and i hope it's not channelled
I have legitimately no idea how to feel about this.
The source material could make this so good, and it had fucking better be, because we probably only get one shot at this ever. But... Activision.
Andrew Cosby is only co-writing new Hellboy movie script, he has nothing to do with Hellboy comics.
Blizzard announced alot of stuff for Diablo universe recently - new lore book, comic series and now a netflix show. But ARPG players do not care about such things, all this effort could be put into making D4 (assuming its being made) even better game. I feel like blizzards inability to understand their audience will result in D4 being mediocre game sadly.
That's pretty much System Shock, so I'm inclined to say that it's a narrative technique that can be really compelling if done well.
D3 does not do it well.
Really hope they nail the atmosphere if they attempt this. I'd enjoy the shit out of a Diablo show if it had the atmosphere similar to Diablo 2.
As bad as Diablo 3 was, Reaper of Souls was a great return to formula in the aesthetic and story perspectives I feel.
If they can keep up the Diablo 2/Reaper of Souls style of storytelling, I'd be onboard.

Cosby is not Mike Mignola
if it has a gothic, gritty atmosphere like d1/d2 ill be all for it, but if it follows d3 im out
"God, uncle Deckard just staaahp it with your schilly little fantasy stories about undead and monsters, you're embarrassing me in front of the Demonhunter and the ex-Archangel!".
crazy, was just thinking about something like this the other day
as death-trooper says, hope they can keep the atmosphere from the original, and the second
would love to see an animated take on this that is very dark, gloomy, and true to the lore before D3
the whole party of three idea was really cool imho
kanduras knight, vizjerei mage, and sightless eye sister working their way into hell to kill diablo would be kickass while hitting every major and optional quest along the way
i thought Mike Mignola was behind it from the title, ehh
It's cuz blizzard is great at setting up worlds, but not at running them.
also a gentle reminder that Blizzard North was responsible for the entirety of the original two Diablo's storylines, and that Activision Blizzard's only entry into the series was a catastrophically bad one
i'm looking forward to this movie though. diablo's setting has always been a very interesting one, and even if they fuck it up and the movie isn't great, it'll still be interesting to see the adaptation to the big screen
Is anyone else hoping Deckard Cain is voiced by Sean Connery?
Also if you get that reference, send help
Who will they make it for? Not the old fans for sure, so why would they stay true to the original lore?
I'm not going to stay a while, nor am I going to bother listening to Netflix talk about how they're going to take an old favorite of mine that's already been dead and buried, and how they want to to dig up the corpse to spit on it.
I'm interested to see where they go with this. I only started playing with D3 and honestly, I really like the game, however none of D3 really screams "Netflix series material", unless they make up some characters who get caught up in the events of D3, namely Reaper of Souls and the whole thing in Westmarch, as I don't feel the Nephalem would be good characters for a Netflix show.
I'd really like to see the Darkening of Tristram tho. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
