Hey all, I play rust on and off, came back to it from a couple month break and everything seemed fine. So I got to launch it again after work like usual after getting a good starter base and it freezes during the bootstrap text. By freeze I mean full lockup, no cursor response, no alt+tabbing out, no ctrl+alt+delete/ctrl+alt+esc. Full lockup. I restart, try again, same again, and again and again. So, something definitely seems very wrong. I was in the steam beta, maybe this was causing some sort of issue, downgraded to the old steam, same again. Deleted rust, reinstalled, same again. started looking at PC stats, maybe it's overheating or something, but nope, temps fine, everything physically fine.
I roll back to older graphics drivers, reinstall rust to an alternate physical hard drive, no luck. I remove literally everything else on my computer, all games I don't play, all apps I don't use, anything that doesn't need to run at startup like the VPN app I use (which wasn't enabled when running rust), checked hard drives, ram test, cpu/gpu stress test. As you can see, aside from re-seating everything on my mobo and reinstalling windows, I've to my knowledge done every bit of problem solving I can think of. Other games run fine, games that are relatively intensive even, fallout 4, no man's sky etc, work perfectly.
Windows error logs don't help at all, seeing as it's a true system lockup, there probably isn't any time to write anything to the log anyway. All I see is an entry stating the system shutdown unexpectedly.
At one point in desperation, I run rust from the game folder. I obviously can't connect to servers this way because it's technically running outside of steam... but the game actually launched!!!
So I try running via steam again last night and it works. Doesn't make any sense at all, but finally I could play again. For a bit, because after that single time that it decided it wanted to crash again. Now it actually locks my system up in the same way as soon as the splash screen has closed, cursor moves around for about 10 seconds, click on stuff, nothing responds and the cursor finally stops moving.
So this is a last resort, I'm totally stumped at this point, I tent to usually find a fix via google for this sort of thing, no luck this time.
