This is gonna happen in the UK soon, I can practically smell it.
This may happen in many parts of the West I feel.
The generations of the Cold War are waning, and with them their ideologies.
Well it did already happen in Scotland effectively several years ago with their voter did replace Labour with Scottish Nationalist Party.
But I think it may or may not will happen as long most people are still clinging on spoiler effect to make UKIP, Liberal Democrats or any minor British/Welsh and Scottish political parties will probably never have chance win big time due mostly thanks of FPTP still used 2/3 in UK political voting system.
Is there anything particularly wrong with the current German parties? They seem pretty decent.
That being said, more options of parties is never a bad thing.
This was inevitable. These huge parties are doing little to nothing to satiate the needs of the people. The problems we had 5 years ago are still present, and since these parties are the ones in charge, the blame falls to them. That's why you see so many people associating with Communist or Fascist movements now a days. Hell, there's high demand in a few countries for Monarchies to make a return! People, as a result of weak policies toward real problems within many countries, feel that the only solution is a strong, authoritarian government.
These parties have screwed up so terribly that people are willing to turn to these extremes and say "Hey, this seems like a viable option"
Ignoring some legitimate immigration and social issues will do that, it empowers more radical parities.
Its weird that we might have Bernie as president in 2 years and Europe will shift far right
god i wish this would happen to us
I'm not so sure, as it's a wasted vote generally. I do think people like the SNP will continue to do well, but even though I think the Lib Dems will do better next election, I doubt many seats will be lost - perhaps 10 at most.
Be careful of what you wish for. The German system of the past was having two major, broad camp parties which could often work together in a grand coalition, eliminating the need for either party to make deals with fringe parties. Which is exactly how governments everywhere ought to function. The trend into the future is a move away from those broad camp parties, towards parties on the far sides of the political fringes - both left and right. Would that honestly be a better alternative?
Mainstream parties haven’t ‘ignored’ immigration. You’d be hard pressed to find a European country where almost all political parties from left to right haven’t moved more to the right on immigration. The problem is that it’s being given too much attention and that mainstream parties are just choosing to follow the narrative of the radical right.
That attention is what strengthens the radical right and anti-immigration sentiment.
The extreme parties aren't helping but I feel that the big parties would have lost a lot either way, they were sorta on the decline anyways just a shame so much went to some right wing nuts.
it seems to me as an American that far-right European parties have very little to offer voters other than just stopping refugees and immigration. Where as in America the right (ostensibly) stands for a things like gun rights, the rights of businesses, religious freedom etc.
Yeah, that's mostly true. There was a great interview by the German public broadcaster ZDF a while ago, where they completely avoided asking one of the AfD prominents about anything relating to immigration. It made him look really stupid.
Mainstream parties have generally failed really badly at reacting to the far right.
Everybody complains about immigrants but nobody noticed how the AfD wants to privatize Germany's social programs and cut taxes for the rich. Do you know why all the trouble about immigrants? One part because they're muslims, which is a ridiculous blanket statement to make, and the other is "they're social welfare parasites". I'll let you handle the irony part, I just want to kill people at this rate.
That's pretty much the crux of the issue; people who have no fucking clue what they want or had no interest in politics and don't know the rules and dangers and all that shit, are brought into the discussion with loaded questions to make them swear fealty to the first asshole who convinces them that "we'll fix it", without bothering to read the fine print or even thinking that there's a fine print.
Typical right wing bullshit people ignore because brown people. The inability of people to do the most basic research and think for themselves is infuriating.
Same with UKIP iirc (at least when it was under Farage), it was quite libertarian in that regard. Our equivalent in Finland is more in favour of social services, benefits and whatnot (though they do have retarded ideas of their own like getting rid of gay marriage, adoption by same sex couples, and IVF), so I think it probably varies by country.
That's how the average voter works in any country. "Ignore everything else, what really matters is XYZ!". The only reason you don't see people bring that up more often is because it's common for the average voter to have tunnel vision in regards to most issues. Unfortunately, the fact that people ignore that tunnel vision is EXACTLY why right wing parties have begun to gain popularity. "They'll deal with the ILLEGALZ!" "THEY'LL SAVE THE MIDDLE CLASS!" "I don't care what they do, as long as they make our country great again!". If we tackled the core problem of uneducated voters, we wouldn't have to worry about extremist parties making a come back.
