During our demo we encountered the Divinity Statue, which acts as a shop where you can trade in orbs collected during combat and exploration, and in that menu we discovered that players will have the option to spend real money to accrue more orbs if they wish to expedite the upgrade process and beef up Dante earlier than usual.
Speaking to Hideaki Itsuno, director on the game from Capcom, we asked why this system is necessary in a game like Devil May Cry 5, and the reason given was a familiar one: it's about giving players options to play the game as they wish. "With giving people the ability to purchase Red Orbs, it’s something we want to give people as an option. If they want to save time and just want to get all the stuff at once, those people can do that. But on the other hand I don’t feel you have to get all the moves, " said Itsuno. "You should be able to play it the way you want to play it."
We also asked Itsuno about how presence of microtransactions will impact the learning process of playing the next Devil May Cry as our experience with these types of action games has taught us that gradually unlocking and learning new abilities is a far more natural means of developing your skills and earning higher performance ranks in battle.
"It’s interesting because from a game design point of view there’s two different things we think about when we set the prices of the moves, skills, and abilities [which can be purchased with Red Orbs]," he explained. "The first thing is the stuff that we feel people should want to get first is made cheaper. So people will think, ‘Oh this is cheap so I’m just going to buy this.’ But then for the stuff that’s going to be harder to use and master, we make that more expensive. Partly because of you save up for that you’re not going to be able to buy as many skills, so you’re going to have the time to learn it. So you have to make the decision between going for the cheaper stuff or saving up, getting the thing that has a lot of application but you’ll have to spend time learning and perfecting."
aaaaaaaaaand there it is
Dmc4SE has it on the PC and it was largely useless, but still worrying.
You can make hella orbs and proud souls by just doing half of the story mode (and not sucking super hard at least). So hopefully this is no different. Though it may be that DMC4SE didn't adjust the pricing of items to take their MTX into account and DMCV will do.
Problem with this is that they couldn't really change the base orb intake in that because people could compare it to the original, in this the rates will be garbage if you don't pay a la shadow of mordor.
DMC4:SE had the same thing and it didn't affect that game much so I don't think it'll be that much of an issue. But then again, the game is rumored to have some type of online multiplayer mode. I'd say we should wait for more details before writing this one off.
I was looking forward to this game, but now Capcom can go and get fucked.
They said they wanted to give people the option to do it if they wanted to. I don't see an issue with it as long as they're not purposely gimping the game to skew people into buying the orbs.
If they really wanted to let players "save time" then they wouldn't have designed their game in such a way that that becomes a player consideration in the first place. The whole idea of "We'll let you give us money to not play the game and save time by skipping the thing we added to waste your time" is just utterly absurd.
Subhuman was one thing, but this is really gonna fuck up the good reception this game's been getting. All we can do is hope this isn't gonna be a Shadow of Mordor situation where the numbers game is very deliberately skewed to encourage MTX. The mere presence of it is certainly going to encourage foul play...
Didn't I just use someone elses save to let me play as Nero/Dante with unlimited stats?
What terrible microtransactions 4 had!
oh my fucking god, it's Deus Ex Mankind Divided part 2, you'd think capcom would take the failures of that game and not apply them to this game too.
Makes me worry that they will somehow incorporate microtransactions into REMake 2 (RE2Make?). They wouldn't would they?
STOP
Sadly, only time will tell.
Sticking to my decision to not touch this until a solid year post release once all the content has been released and a cheaper definitive edition comes out.
Fuck this.
This is Capcom standard fair for the past several years really. You could buy the armor capsules, items and even boss weapons in the garbage Mega Man X iOS port and that was, what, 2011-12?
All we can hope for is either backlash causes them to be cowed like with the massive Subhuman debacle, or it doesn't affect the gameplay upgrade pacing at all and is only an option for stupid idiots that want everything ASAP. It'll still leave a sour taste in people's mouths just for existing, but not much we can do about that in this day and age of gaming except complain.
i can pay money to play the game
then i can pay more money to not play the game
or
i can just not play the game

RIP - Devil May Cry
At first, it was only the Devil. Now, it is us who may cry
Bullshit. Whatever happened to the times when the types of players wanting an easier experience could just play on easy and get an orb multiplier or some shit? Nowadays it's "nah fuck that, make em pay for it"
Come on now Capcom, you were going on a high streak.
Now sure it's "Optional" but they could easily make abilities hard to get in order to force us to pay up so that prospect is what scares me mostr.
You guys do realize this was in DMC4:SE too, right?
I doubt it'll be this much of an issue. The idea of buying red orbs with real money was stupid and still is stupid but as long as it doesn't get in the way of actually enjoying the game itself then I don't mind? Like, microtransactions can get fucked and I just wanna enjoy the game as is, but you guys are acting as if the game/franchise is dead because of this. It's a real stupid practice I won't lie but as long as natural red orb collection in-game isn't being choke-held or something like that then I think things will be fine.
If there IS an issue that's discovered when the game launches, then you guys can get mad. I know I would, too. But for now I think we should just wait for more info. Just hang in tight and don't panic yet.
AAA? more like A$$
Spider Man PS4 - 3.3 million copies in 3 days. Zero microtransactions and a shit ton of money earned.
There's no excuse at this point. Put out a good product that people want to buy and they'll buy it.,
When will companies stop trying to gouge out people's cash like this?
Video games are taking a bad turn for the worst. Multiplayer games having this was bad, but single-player games? Bad and just dumb.
4 special edition had this but it was an updated version of a game that originally didn't have microtransactions in it. this game is presumably designed and balanced around microtransactions. fuck capcom.
If the grind is noticeably worse than in previous titles, I'll care. As stupid as this shit is, it doesn't bother me as long as it doesn't clearly impact the design of the game.
"presumably" And what have you got to back up that claim aside from this bit of news? We don't know how this game plays out with its progression yet and we probably won't know until it releases in March next year. For all we know this could be exactly like DMC4:SE where the microtransactions were just there without much of an affect on the overall experience. Again, there's still a lot we don't know about the game, we just need to sit tight and wait for more info. I'm not trying to defend microtransactions as I do think they have no place in a game like this, but we still don't know the full extent to how this will play out.
This used to be free and it was called cheat codes.
I wouldn't really care if they didn't use that bullshit reasoning. If a developer really wanted players to have the choice to make the game easier, they'd include an easier mode, or even cheat codes. Or maybe we'll just see some cheat DLC like Dead Rising 2 had
