Nearly 50 members of the Yale Law School faculty are calling for the FBI to investigate sexual assault accusations brought against Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett
Kavanaugh.
The faculty made the request in the form of an open letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday, writing that "allegations of sexual assault require a neutral factfinder and an
investigation that can ascertain facts fairly."
"As the Senate Judiciary Committee debates Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination, we write as faculty members of Yale Law School, from which Judge Kavanaugh graduated, to urge
that the Senate conduct a fair and deliberate confirmation process," reads the letter, which was signed by 49 faculty members. "With so much at stake for the Supreme Court and the
nation, we are concerned about a rush to judgment that threatens both the integrity of the process and the public’s confidence in the Court."
The letter adds that the FBI must have "adequate time to investigate facts" and concludes by saying that the Supreme Court confirmation process "must always be conducted, and
appointments made, in a manner that gives Americans reason to trust" the court. Kavanaugh, who graduated from Yale and Yale Law School, is facing increased scrutiny regarding
sexual assault accusations leveled against him, which he has flatly denied.
Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is pushing to have Kavanaugh and Ford appear before the panel next week to discuss the allegations. Ford initially called for
the FBI to investigate her claims before she would agree to testify. But her lawyers have said that she could be willing to testify next Thursday, based on an agreement to certain terms.
Senate Republicans responded with a counteroffer on Friday, that Ford come before the committee on Wednesday and testify first, among other conditions. The letter from Yale Law
School faculty members also comes just a day after the dean of the school, Heather Gerken, responded to reports that a professor had advised students to have a "certain look" to earn
a judicial clerkship for Kavanaugh.
Gerken said "the allegations being reported are of enormous concern to me and to the School" in a letter written to the law school community.
he's going to get confirmed. Mitch McConnell said unequivocally he will be confirmed before november, the gop won't stop for common good they exist now to rig the judiciary and just that.
Well it will hurt them in the midterms, so there's that.
no you don't get it, mcconnell does not care, ensuring a multi decade conservative majority throughout the judiciary is his entire legacy and because he rules the senate with an iron fist and will get the 50+1 votes he needs, either before or after the midterms because his party is all about absolute fealty to their leaders, even flake will vote for this guy irregardless of what happens this week.
I know McConnell's scum, but I want to have hope for something in politics at least. Whether it fuels Democrat gains or otherwise.
sorry he's spent 12 years on this, he's not going to let a woman stop it. I doubt he serves another congressional term as senate majority leader though, especially if he looses the gavel
You'd think if he spent 12 years on this he'd get someone better than Kavanuagh.
Trump picked Kavanaugh, and he picked him to reverse Roe v Wade and because of his opinions that the executive should be completely immune from investigation (like, oh, I don't know, special counsel investigations).
doesn't matter he's been approved by the federalist society, that's literally all that matters that stamp off from a right wing shady group that's stated goal is only to rig the justice system for conservatives.
I heard a theory on twitter that if Brett is taken down he stops listening to them (tired of experts) and nominates whoever he wants
a justice he finds by looking up "lawyer" on amazon
Would be more qualified than Bush's pick Harriet Miers, she was pulled for knowing so little on constitutional law.
I have a feeling if Ford testifies it will go the same way Anita Hill's did against Clarence Thomas. A bunch of obfuscation, deflection and slut-shaming from the members of the committee because it's all a dog and pony show anyways and they're going to rig the court no matter what since it fits their political agenda.
That'd be great, since it's up to Congress, and if he nominates someone utterly incompetent, they won't pass nomination unless the Senate gives up on its role of consulting and oversight, which is disturbingly plausible.
trump turning against the federalists and the likes of the heartland institute would be funny, ironic, but would end his presidency in terms of getting anything done
Call me optimistic, but I think this kind of testimony holds a bit more weight in the public eye now than it did over 25 years ago. The majority of Republicans will no undoubtedly be dismissive as they already have been, but there are only a few Republican Senators we need to defect to bring Kavanaugh down.
Republicans know a public hearing and investigation will not be good for them. That's why they've been trying to hurry this along and dismiss it out of hand.
Sounds like a complete positive, then?
ya but you sound liberal so it can't happen
