Who would want to sign up when there is a madman as Commander-in-Chief?
Note that while this is happening they're also trying to thin the ranks by removing foreigners who joined explicitly to offer their unique services (Arabic fluency, for example) in exchange for citizenship, before they can actually qualify for citizenship, often on tiny technicalities. Good job.
Better pay is probably one of the best ways to counter-act this. But most of the money gets lost in some blackhole that has never been investigated. There's so much missing waste that could help with the VA and aftercare.
Good, the US military should settle down a bit. I feel like till now it's been weirdly idolized.
Theres this weird military worship here. Soldiers as a class seem to be more respected on average than standard citizens, but unfortunately that means people view the military as a whole, including the MIC, as something to be put ahead of citizens on the priority list even though many aspects of the military are not deserving of it, MIC and money wasting for example.
Would it be plausible that there's a trillion dollars in lost money? Showing people that the military's wasted a trillion with a capital T might finally stop the ballooning military budget.
Because of how shit we treated Vietnam/Korean War vets, even the draftees. Amercians over-corrected but I would rather have this over-correction where we bend over backwards to help those who put their lives on the line for us rather than us throwing them in the garbage.
There have been several audits demonstrating that the US military regularly can't account for trillions. Trump increased the military budget to over $700b for the year. So, not in this timeline it doesn't.
Like, if you guys haven't read up on it, the poverty rate for Vietnam and Korean War veterans was fucking huge during a time where jobs weren't difficult and the pay had more pull. Drug use and suicide were also far higher than they are now. And the American people? They actively insulted and turned their back on them. We still do to this day with jokes about Vietnam Flashbacks and such.
America worships its military. It doesn't give a shit about veterans once the system's finished chewing on them and spits them out, and they never have. It's all lip service. The VA has been systematically underfunded.
I'm not saying its better now, I never said that. And the underfunding of the VA is not due to Americans not doing anything. They have repeatedly demanded better action to be taken. You can blame that on that fucking blackhole of a military budget going into nebulous zones.
The OP already states that they fell to reach their goal despite billions in dollars to the DoD as well as extra bonuses promised to recruits.
Bonuses don't mean better overall pay, for what our troops sacrifice, they get paid shit.
I don't think people are saying we should disrespect vets again its a worship of the whole military that is dangerous for our country.
Never claimed you did. Just saying that the dominant narrative of the 20th century, when it came to US vets, has largely been neglect.
You don't know the half of it. They sell fucking flash lights as "tactical" and with military/SWAT imagery slapped all over the packaging. Some people's favorite color, is "camo".
I don't see a problem with this honestly, whilst they shouldn't be revered as gods in my opinion Soldiers, as with LEOs, Paramedics and Firemen should be respected more than the average citizen, they are putting their lives on the line to protect/save you, the least you can do is treat them with a bit more respect.
They have all that here too
Draft incoming.
I have no problem showing respect to these amazing people. The respect however is used by higher ups to convince people that they help the troops with 700bn in funding when it instead all goes into a pocket of a dod contractor and soldiers get shafted. Its used to defend against defence spending. "The military needs more money because the troops deserve it!" -my mom, without realizing the troops see none of it. But sont try to say anything about it, your head will get bitten off because you dont "support the troops" 😒
Hey, when there’s a rabid manchild ruling my country who could possibly start a war and have have me die on foreign soil just so he can distract people to not overthrow him, I wouldn’t sign up either.
Yes, but here's the difference: Some will buy the flashlight thinking maybe it has a longer battery life, or a more rugged case, or a high output of light, because those are the sorts of "over-powered" features you expect on "tactical" hardware. But others still will buy it because they can't jerk it without a uniform on.
I can't see anything inherently wrong with camo patterns being commercially available. It's just a pattern, like plaid or the fleur de lies. It's got the same military significance as olive drab or navy blue.
"Money being shoveled into a black hole" is probably the most accurate description for US tax management. There's so much money getting lost not just to corporate contractors but also incompetence, lack of oversight and plain ol' embezzlement and not giving a shit.
The pay and benefits aren't worth signing away your rights and time. They've just got steadily worse and worse for what is basically a 24/7 live-in job that traps you in a location for 4 years.
Soldiers deserve respect, but the way that soldiers are revered in the US just looks insane. It seems that you can have terrible politicians with terrible stances on almost everything, but if that politician states how big his boner for soldiers is, the American people just lap that shit up and vote them into office.
Every branch of special forces through out the entire military is lacking people quite significantly. IIRC there are usually 15 teams of 10 special forces operators active. Currently there are only something like 8 teams fully fielded. Again, IIRC. It's a serious issue, but I don't blame anyone for not wanting to join up right now.
Its because everyone is waiting to join the space force.
