Liverpool, England (Reuters) - Britain’s opposition Labour Party is set to vote against any deal Prime Minister Theresa May clinches with the European Union and is open to a second referendum with the option of staying in the bloc, Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said on Tuesday.
Seems like it might be down to the small parties to determine whether it passes or dies, if there is a deal at all
really an opening salvo in case there really is another election they're establishing a firm position against brexit if people vote for them.
Brexit has caused such a deep and long constitutional crisis that Labour's leadership is now having delusions of a soft coup. They keep talking of 'forcing' an election - I don't understand how there could be any mechanism by which the opposition could do that. That's even if they didn't have utter fuckwombles like Kate Hoey ignoring the whip.
How on Earth is voting with their conscience anything like akin to a soft coup?
The second referendum shouldn't be about remaining in EU - absolutely, it should be an option, but the second referendum should be about the type of exit UK wishes for - Staying in EEA, FTA, Staying in Customs union, No deal or just staying in EU - although it shouldn't be a binding referendum, because trying to get population to have a majority vote on one of the options would be impossible - but seeing the most popular option out of all those, would be a good point of going forward
Voting with their consience isn't going to magically trigger a GE - I suppose they plan on attempting to trigger one alongside other parties during the coming chaos over the deal. There's just a particular Labour way of getting delusions of grandeur over Brexit, but only once they've let the Tories get right to the edge of destroying the UK as we know it by voting for their legislation right up till the end. It's party strategy before country.
I keep seeing that a people's vote and whatnot is only going to be between types of brexit, rather than brexit in general. Saddening, considering it's going to be a shit sandwich regardless
It's one of those "1-10 votes". How badly do you want to be screwed? Not too badly, Bumpy road again, stick it in my eye and fuck everyone's shit right up'.
Boilrig is currently twisting and biting on a cloth like a cartoon villain.
Wow its almost as if this kind of shit should never be decided by referendum. They could do another one and the public will be no better informed about the process. The best you can hope for is higher turnout and more people voting remain after witnessing what a crap fire this has been so far.
Hold another referendum, give me (and everyone) a vote this time around considering it's my rights as an EU citizen that these scummy bastards are trying to take.
That's a good idea, however the problems that the first referendum revealed is that, first, no one seems to know what the EU is or how it works, second, the parties are not interested in informing the voter, only scaremongering into voting for what they want.
If the people barely know what the EU is, they won't know what the EEA or FTA is.
Referendums(and democracies in general) required an informed public, but an uniformed public that they can easily manipulate is what the parties want.
If they vote against the deal, it either means continue negotiation (time dependant), or no deal.
How is pushing for a parliamentary election anything like a coup?
Surely the point in the opposition is to hold the party in power to account.
No shit? Though how they behave it is headed 99% chance of no deal.
But as much as I'd like a second referendum to happen, not sure if they would do a complete 180 and stop this whole Brexit charade.
They will get humiliated either way, just one option includes self-induced economic suicide.
