https://www.politico.eu/article/theresa-may-pledges-lowest-business-tax-rate-in-g20-post-brexit/ tl;dr UK goes full tax haven just off the shores of Europe.
(pictured: casino britain - a tax haven, it's people disgruntled and jobless, trying and failing to compete in a race to the bottom with china and india) *record scratch* *freeze frame* Britain: "Yup, that's me. you're probably wondering how I ended up in this situation"
I don't think this will appeal to companies since getting goods into Europe from the UK will be extremely difficult after Brexit.
Depends on the final deal, and its probably more aimed at services than goods. They have to get the economy kick started, I wouldn't be surprised if Labour pushed it up after a couple of elections if they get into power.
Still not going to attract any business. There's no benefit for a company to set up in the UK if Brexit goes through and May has no plan.
wow it's not as if half of our businesses pay their due tax anyway, and how the fuck is charging them less going to help Britain? By encouraging them not to leave after Brexit? That objectively puts us in an economically worse situation than we were in to begin with, which fucker has been given the calculator for this one?
I don't see why not, you don't suddenly ignore one of the largest economies on the planet, with a lower tax rate, people will opt to move companies and begin businesses there. It has been a concern from inside the EU since Brexit about the UK making a move on reducing tax rates and essentially become a tax haven just off Europe's coast, it was possibly one of the upsides of Cheques, the EU being able to at least slow down the UK's tax changes.
And this will definitely not be used in any way as fuel for their war against poor people
I'd wonder what the future of this country is going to be like, but I almost completely don't care and I can't kind of sense I know where it's going, but we'll see anyway. p.s. I don't think it's going anywhere good, keep that to yourself though, wouldn't want to bring everyone down.
"I don't see why not" Maybe it's because you have a tentative grasp on economics in this day in age, considering the individuals who are actually experts in that field are saying otherwise.
in response to worries over rapidly sinking ship, captain promises passengers 50% off price of tickets
If you are going to lower your taxes to the bottom of the G20, that changes the game.
Finance companies won't have "the european passport" so won't want to be here. Manufacturing will have to deal with tariffs from the nearest neighbour (europe) along with the possibilty of not being able to export to europe at all due to "rules of origin" laws. Sure taxes might be lower, but what good is that if companies don't want to operate here because it's more preferable to operate from europe (or some BRICS country with low taxes with which we figure out some sort of trade deal). We're tryna participate in a race to the bottom tariffs and regulations (from europe and other trade blocs) are put in place precisely to stop companies jumping ship to the lower tax/lower regulation country. It's a bad idea. But of course boilrig doesn't care coz boilrig doesn't have rely on UK tax money to fund his healthcare and policing.
For gods sake Boilrig, they already have a tax haven. UK only loses in this upcoming no-deal deal. Also, what has the geography of the UK have to do with being a Tax Haven, digital moneyflows don't care which offshore island bank they get dumped on.
The finance companies have already committed to opening satellite offices or expanding their branches already in the EU to avoid such an issue, however even as of now, they have gone nowhere near moving operations even at a large scale to the EU. Manufacturing was always going to be an issue, so it depends on what the final deal is, and yeah, the rules of origin laws will affect them. There isn't a reason not to continue to operate in the UK, also I didn't say I support this move.
Oh god it is the satellite meme again, I'd also like to see some credible sources on that. You do realize that UK will most likely become the satellite office location themselves? As said lots of times, if they lose access to the EU economic bloc, the movement of the central operations of most financial businesses is most likely just one contract away. Where their HQ is located is mostly just written on paper.
"there were always going to be issues but in the long term things will be better than ever I promise, a compulsive liar on tv told me so!!!! BREXIT MEANS BREAKFAST HARD YESTERDAY STRONG AND NO DEAL IS BETTER THAN STABLE! BISH BASH BOSH" The rest of your post(s) isn't worth addressing.
Cutting business tax is a massive sacrifice, concentrating wealth away from the lower and middle classes to the wealthy. Doing that just to make your country less unattractive to do business with is desperate and idiotic.
ah throw the usual conservative book at it
Wasn't the whole Leave movement about how the EU cost a lot of money for the UK? Lowering taxes will result in the government having less money anyway.
When money goes to building sinister infrastructure across Europe (ugh didn't we do enough for them?), serving common people, it's a problem When money goes to building beautiful mansions on private islands (ooh someday I'll be rich!!), serving our superiors, it's very important
It's a strategy called Starve the Beast which is employed by conservatives to weaken government wherever it exists. The goal is to get the debt as high as possible by reducing taxes for your donors and shunting as much of what remains into the military so that you can shrug and say "BUT GOVERNMENT NO HAVE MUNS!" Whenever the prospect of actually helping the middle class comes up.
"We're crashing this country with no survivors."
No it doesn’t you deceitful man
I mean for that to happen they'd have to manage to stay in G20 I'm being fascetious if it's not obvious
