Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver - Did You Know Gaming?

I might have to pick up an old DS to play HeartGold. Pokemon Gold is the only Pokemon game i've ever really got into and it was a massive part of my childhood. I remember getting the Pikachu Gameboy and Gold as my first console for christmas, spent ages working out how to get out of the house by walking over the floor mat.
SoulSilver is THE perfect pokemon game
Updated graphics, loads of pokemon, loads of extra content compared to the originals, and fucking johto and kanto
JOHTO AND KANTO MOTHERFUCKERS
HeartGold is better
Uhm... Isn't it the same?
Plus HGSS had Platinum's engame content of the BF. I hope gen 8 has the amount of content that HGSS and Platinum has, but I doubt it.
No game has had a postgame like that to my knowledge.
In fact, IMO the best versions are HGSS and the first gen remakes on the third gen. Both have a post game, and allow pokemon from the next gens.
Ok there are some games after that have post game, but imo they don't go as far as gen 2 and gen 1 remakes.
Especially gen 2 and its remakes. Goddamn are they good.
Pokemon Silver was the bomb, man. It was also the first game I played to have a save function instead of one of those puzzle password things you had to memorize to access later levels. Spent a good couple of days playing, not saving and restarting the game over and over until I had the brilliant idea to look at the fucking menu and see the save option. God damn its been almost 20 years since then, wtf
Gen 2 had the best end-game, but still suffered from the issue of you can't really raise a B-team without starting over or insane grinding since you can't really refight the trainers, and the wild pokemon levels only really go to 25.
those jump to like, 40 iirc
just rerun the pokemon league and the RED fight. Also the mountain with red in it have pokemon up to level 50
The issue is moving on from level 20 to get to level 40. There's nothing to fight in those ranges.
hold up did you just spoiler tag a 19 year old game with a remake
The tidbit that Gold and Silver were designed to be the “final” pokemon games makes a lot of sense, and I think it explains why I find the Gen 2 pokemon games so endearing. There’s a lot of heart put into Johto and a sense of finality to the adventure that the coming games don’t have.
Plus facing down against Red, the protag from the previous game, stands as one of my personal favorite final bosses in any game ever.
Despite pouring far more childhood hours into Gen 3 games, I was more excited for the announcement of HG/SS than I was the Gen 3 remakes.
I gotta say, I've played Gen1-3 this year and Gen2 GSC/HGSS is probably the best Gen.
Yes I do know HGSS isn't technically in the same Gen, but they're remakes of Gen 2 games so whatever.
But yeah it was just so much fun beating the first 8 gyms and Elite Four, then going back to Kanto and doing it all over again.
I had to get my brother to beat Red for me, and by god it was rewarding seeing him do it.
i prefer HGSS over the originals, but I think art style wise, the original GB/C versions were better. Like the building styles, building interiors. I don’t think they translated well.
Potentially nostalgia, and I fall foul of it too when thinking about the older Pokemon titles.
But, some issues that I had with HGSS:
The reuse of DPPt assets such as in the house interiors (as you mention) leading to a loss of original Japanese design elements
Following Pokemon, as nice as it was, wasn't as developed as its first appearance in Yellow
Replacing Kris with Lyra felt a bit strange - copying the Brendan/May & Lucas/Dawn dynamics that weren't present in the original games.
However, they were excellent titles and a very well done set of remakes.
Really? I thought the following pokemon system completely eclipsed the system from Yellow based on amount of pokemon followers alone. I'll admit I wanted more out of the system, but I remember having a lot more fun with it than I did in Yellow.
From what I remember in Yellow, there's not nearly the amount of interactions for Pikachu alone, and aside from that, theres only a few interactable points around the map where Pikachu actually does something.
I'm not big on the nitty gritty of the pokemon mechanics though, so this is a genuine question. Did I miss something about Yellow's follower system?
I get what you're saying.
Art style from before gen3 was more aggressive. Male and female characters were drawn in a more aggressive way, almost looking like bad guys all the time. Styles just look a whole lot different.

Funny text aside, I do prefer the gen 2 look of the art work.
But in terms of the ingame graphics and design choices? There might be some nostalgia in my head, most likely so, but theres this simplicity and personality to the choices made for the originals. Keeping colors not as vibrant and varied made it less cutesy.
In a way, the only reason to play the remakes over the originals is because of having way more content. A damn good reason but... I can just play Crystal on my phone or on my DS or on my 2DS or on my microwave. My phone can probably play SS, but the whole deal with using 2 screens is a bit of a hassle to me, especially when I have smaller phones.
Pikachu had a rather robust "mood" and "friendship" level in Yellow. It never had any gameplay impact (although his friendship had to be at a certain level to get Bulbasaur), but it was a nice tidbit that helped with immersion.
