Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard said earlier in the summer that the studio would love to have cross-platform play in Fallout 76, but "Sony isn't being as helpful as we want them to be" in making it happen. Today, Sony dropped a surprise announcement that it will allow Fortnite cross-play between the PS4 and other consoles. Could Fallout 76 also be a beneficiary of Sony's new spirit of openness and cooperation?
Is anyone suprised?
kind of a given? Aside from like Fortnite and Rocket League, it's not like it's the standard

What's B.E.T.A. stand for Pete
They've been calling the beta the B.E.T.A. since E3, dude.

My mistake

Yeah the time for this probably passed months ago. Its likely they've locked down the current build on features as they move to squash bugs to make the release window.
We don't know if Sony is just making an exception for Fortnite either.
I'm confused as bethesda stuff is broken by default even after release.
It's more of a demo than a beta as it's only a month before the game releases.
They don't have a whole lot of experience with this type of game as it is so baby steps are to be expected, and crossplay is a rare sight to begin with.
People seem to not know that maintaining and scheduling patches for cross platform games is quite complicated, especially with pushing out console patches being a major pain in any developers back.
but sony just opened crossplay
If they add crossplay, it would be later. Sony JUST allowed Fortnite, the biggest game right now to do it, you think they are gonna allow everyone to do it right away? Think about it, this game is coming to PC, Xbone and PS4, prob wont have crossplay with console and PC ever, and knowing Sony, they want to see how this effects their profits, so the only thing it could crossplay with, Xbone, is out of the question right now.
wait didn't Bethesda just roasted Sony for not allowing Cross-play sometime ago? Or is it some other company
the only complications with cross platform play:
synchronizing multiple ID systems (Nintendo Network ID/PSN/Xbox Live) profiles, which could be done actively (Bethesda profiles; e.g. Fortnite) or passively (new account per profile a la Rocket League)
Creating an in-game socialization feature (this would include voice, invites, chat)
Synchronizing updates across the platforms (you'd ship them all to the platforms, when all have been approved, role out in A/B)
there are no issues with implementing it with the game itself, the underlying networking architecture is shared among all the platforms
every company roasted sony.
I mean you can roast a company for shitty practice, but it’s not like Bethesda are on the same level here.
I mean I'm assuming the engine is still a heavily modified gamebryo, if it is I'm surprised they got multiplayer working on it in the first place, and I completely expect plenty of Bethesda jank as it is, multi platform would make it so much more complicated
'Beta' has basically just become a marketing term at this point. It's really just the Triple A version of "early access" without using those exact words, and more often than not you're still paying to access this demo of the game.
That's supporting different platforms. Afaik crossplay is a matter of communication protocol, which should be more or less the same between consoles.
Lol of course. So much for Bethesda's claim that it was only being held up by Sony.
The communication protocol is the easy part. It also requires you to host your own service, matchmaking, accounts, etc. Cannot rely on the platform tools. (PSN, Nintendo's online thing, etc) You can no longer balance per platform or allow for mods on PC. You're also bound to the slowest platform.
If you need to push an update, you will have to update all platforms at the same time or have a period of time where players can't cross-play. With console platforms games needing to go through extensive QA of the platform holder. (Sony, Nintendo, etc) Which can take a very long time, the more platforms you support, the more external variables get added.
These are logistical issues though, not technology issues.
Honestly with the wreck that the creation engine can be at times I am already amazed if they can get a stable multiplayer thing going, and I can understand crossplay on different consoles/architectures is even more of a bitch to keep stable.
They renamed to just "Nintendo Account"
people don't give gamebryo enough credit. it's an incredibly capable and modular engine. the disaster bethesda turned it into isnt the fault of gamebryo
To be honest I still have doubts that Sony is actually becoming open to crossplay. The fact that they described it as a "beta" seems like a good way to just only do it with Fortnite (the game most people were complaining to Sony about) and just go into hiding again.
Understandable, considering we are going to have modding on pc
