https://metro.co.uk/2018/09/27/couple-attack-police-officer-after-tesco-refuse-to-sell-them-over-20-water-bottles-7984237/ Uhhhh... a couple months ago I bought maybe 50 bottles of water from Tesco as stock. Not good for the environment sure, but this is weird.
Is this what passes as "Brutality" these days?
yes
Yeah you cant even touch someone nowadays without tears.
they should have used self-checkout
Yeah the guy who was "brutalised" was being a total twat. No sympathy.
not illegal to be a twat
Look at how much he kicked off and imagine the security guard trying to get him outside...
a competent security guard should be capable of controlling this kind of non-situation, i've seen way worse.
He was being a bit insufferable with his attitude but that probably doesn't constitute an arrest. @Hezzy I agree that this is a far cry from brutality, but can you share any thoughts on how it was handled in general?
this whole issue could have been avoided if Volvic stocked these https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91LQd0F6vYL._SY355_.jpg
Oh boy, another case of "Got asked to leave multiple times by a cop, think I'll stick around anyway" 2:33 - "Go on and arrest me" ...proceeds to fight back after cop tells him to put his hands up. "THIS IS RACISM" Really pal, what do you think happens when you decide to resist arrest?
tl;dr is that if a police officer asks you to do something you do it and if you have an issue with it you make a complaint later or while complying, not be difficult, make a huge scene then force the officers to escalate, resist arrest and hurt an officer in the process and get done for assault then cry racism/police brutality. Bonus points for trying to argue that Tesco is a 'public place' so recording is allowed despite the store manager saying its private property and they don't allow recording. ‘Then I saw the police officer and called him but as soon as he came over I got this sinking feeling in my stomach. He wasn’t interested in hearing my side of the story.’ Ok I get this has more of a focus on the police because he was arrested and there was a confrontation but shouldn't the entire issue lie with the store refusing to sell them water and calling security? It isn't the policeman's job to say whether or not he's allowed to buy water but it is his job to ask him to leave if the store want him out and he's refusing.
It's not illegal to try and purchase vast amounts of water Tesco security can deal with it, that's their job
It is legal for the store, for whatever reason, to refuse to sell them it. I agree it's shitty and have no clue why they would do that though. What is illegal is for the individuals to record inside Tesco, which is technically private property. The Tesco security man was wholly ineffective (despite being right) but arguably that's because the male was bigger than him and highly disagreeable. You'd think he should've been able to deal with the situation but, in fairness, he's an old bloke and maybe a bit cowardly. Plus I used to tutor near here and it's not a great area. The police should've handled it better by listening to the couple and then agreeing with the store manager and the security guard. From the video it's apparent the police officer just wanted to get the situation out of the way and wasn't prepared to give it the attention and nuance the situation evidently required. The police officer was also highly physical with the male (again, likely because he was a physically imposing bloke) when he really should've just politely told him to leave and then walked out behind him making sure he was leaving. In the scuffle that ensued there is obviously blood on the floor (you can see a shop member cleaning it up when the couple are being arrested) so the man did obviously cause injuries to the officer in the scuffle. The woman of the couple kept yelling about being punched when it is clear she was just being detained (she probably didn't think they were being recorded). Basically (as is usual in situations like these) everyone was in the wrong in some way or another.
Belligerence of the customers aside, this started with them being bullied and the cops are pathetic to charge them with assault over something this trivial. Yeah people should comply with officers and deal with lawsuits/etc afterwards, but we shouldn't just blame the victims here. They didn't start this.
....so why wouldn't they sell him the water?
the manager is a moron. there is an entire aisle dedicated to water in tesco, it's not like it's a heatwave and they would ration it. which they didn't when there was..
Why the refusal? Isn't it in their interest to make money? Seems fishy as fuck.
The only thing I can imagine is that there was a sale on the water and it was limited per costumer or something
why though, there is an entire aisle full of water. it looked like maybe 30 bottles they were buying. which is 5 multipacks? people can buy 10 crates of beer no issue so whats so good about water?
I really don't understand why they wouldn't just sell them the water? They didn't feel like scanning each bottle?
Doesn't like every POS terminal have a "times" button? They do over here. Seen it used plenty, they count how many you have, scan one and type in how many units there are.
On certain deals in Tesco you're limited to three crates of beer. Could be the same thing? i.e. manufacturer has a deal on but if people buy over a certain amount then they (or Tesco) lose money so stop the sale. Might be an explanation. Also, I have no clue why people above are disagreeing with my post.
