In the months that followed, officials across China have removed crosses from church buildings and demolished others perceived as too large in the hope of reducing the public visibility of religion. Jin’s Zion Church in Beijing, one of the biggest unofficial congregations in the country, was abruptly demolished by authorities this month, who then sent him a bill for 1.2m yuan (£133,000) for the related costs. Jin had preached there every Sunday for decades. “I have hope for the future, these campaigns were done in Roman times, under Stalin and under Mao, and none succeeded,” he said. “It will only have the opposite effect, and if Communist party cadres studied history they would see this. Crackdowns will cause the church to grow faster, and help church be more united.” Even while religions were technically allowed to exist – there are 60 million Christians in China – the constitution says “religious bodies and religious affairs are not subject to any foreign domination”, a key hurdle for the Catholic church. China limits the number of officially sanctioned religions to five: Buddhism, Taoism, Protestantism, Catholicism and Islam.
This is usually about the time Government realize their mistake before mass murdering people.
China's had close to a dozen moments like that already, the government continues to decide to just mass murder even more people.
Sure, they've done a fairly good job at doing what they do too. Typically though when you start removing peoples religion then suddenly people start getting rather pissy. Then the killing begins. Lets hope it doesn't come to that, at the same time, it might be what is needed to end this totalitarian nightmare and set a fresh example to the rest of the world of what happens when you overtly try like this.
It may be too late. China is already sending thousands of Muslims to "reeducation camps". Just a matter of time before Christians are targeted for the same.
Xi Jingping is the wordt thing that's happened to China since Mao.
Xi Jinping has been pretty explicit that he wants to be the next Mao.
china needs a good old fashioned wave of political assassinations and bombings tbh
So the already oppressive government can clamp down on the people further?
meh, might be a bit less of an attractive thought to the government if communist party offices start becoming explosive if u get my drift
It'll make it even worse for the dissidents if anything.
People double down when attacked, not transition to other ideas.
Not exactly like they need an opportunity; back when they declared Falun Gong to be heresy against the party they staged five self-immolations to sway public opinion. They're quite good at organizing false-flags.
