https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/trump-administration-sees-a-7-degree-rise-in-global-temperatures-by-2100/2018/09/27/b9c6fada-bb45-11e8-bdc0-90f81cc58c5d_story.html?utm_term=.5cf5b69f8101 Last month, deep in a 500-page environmental impact statement, the Trump administration made a startling assumption: On its current course, the planet will warm a disastrous 7 degreesby the end of this century. A rise of 7 degrees Fahrenheit, or about 4 degrees Celsius, compared with preindustrial levels would be catastrophic, according to scientists. Many coral reefs would dissolve in increasingly acidic oceans. Parts of Manhattan and Miami would be underwater without costly coastal defenses. Extreme heat waves would routinely smother large parts of the globe. But the administration did not offer this dire forecast, premised on the idea that the world will fail to cut its greenhouse gas emissions, as part of an argument to combat climate change. Just the opposite: The analysis assumes the planet’s fate is already sealed.
Just the opposite: The analysis assumes the planet’s fate is already sealed. Get ready to see this defense on Fox and co.
"It's fine. We'll just advise people to turn their thermostats down 9 degrees. Sheesh, alarmist liberals." - Probably Trump
Hey, at least them acknowledging the validity of climate change is progress. ......
If they honestly want to go with that, funding for space travel and settling mars needs to fucking skyrocket. Unless theyre going with "lol fuck you we'll be dead anyway", which they most likely are.
They're just shifting to the new argument, which is "WELL, IT'S REAL, BUT TOO LATE NOTHING TO DO ABOUT IT, LET'S DRILL BABY DRILL!!!!"
The good news about it is, I guess, we're about to learn a lot about planet-scale terraforming, which should help a lot when we evacuate to Mars?
"things are getting worse but oh well" fucking seriously this is not how you solve problems
Seriously! Like, if nothing else, at least start ramping up efforts and research towards finding out mitigation techniques for the various problems that will be incoming, relating to infrastructure, refugee crises, etc.
when government officials have the same mindset as your average joe of 'oh well'... i want off this fucking ride
but its cold outside????
the wording of their report almost implies 'nothing will change the course' in regards to whether or not the obama tailpipe stuff gets stalled 6 years or not. Like I hope somebody with two braincells to rub together can figure out we should maybe spend some of that defense dosh on correcting the course, even just a little bit. Or, we could have the world's best military until there's no need for it anymore
I think there needs to be consideration of sending elected climate change deniers out of Earth's orbit. It'd be a good start to working towards something better for generations who'll suffer.
would this official report basically condemn intentional climate change denial as crimes against humanity
jokes on you, the military is secretly training for a permanent solution to climate change.... nuking the Sun
The earth will literally get ruined and humanity is going to suffer unimaginably. It's crazy to know we could have mitigated this somewhat, but we're not.
Greed.
and to think, if people fucked a little less, we would have been fine... This whole experience kinda explains why our galactic neighborhood isn't sprawling with intelligent life.
Mitigated somewhat? With something vaguely resembling actual foresight we could probably have already mostly reversed it. Stuff like this always drives home just how dumb your average animal must be. We're the most intelligent lifeform on the planet and large swathes of our populace are still dumb barely conscious animals with no self awareness or foresight.
If you guys really want some nightmare fuel, consider this: think to yourself, what must have happened/change that was so bad, even the far-right, anti-environmental Trump Administration of all people are acknowledging the validity of Climate Change (and its future impacts) with predictions this dire? Sure, the layman can ignore the high level science/warnings/etc (such as the bubbling lakes with emerging methane), while still nevertheless observing more basic and empirical changes, such as the hurricanes in 2017/2018 being bad on top of hot summers and some abnormal September weather. But, like, that alone should not have been enough for any of the fence sitters or deniers to change their minds if they hadn't already (prior to when shit really hits the fan with refugee crises, foot shortages, boiling heat, etc). I'm wondering if something super ominous has came up behind the scenes that is even making the Trump Administration face the music?
I was born too late to discover the world, too early to explore the stars, but just in time to watch the world literally burn.
So does this set us at Bargaining or Depression on the stages of Conservative (Climate) Grief?
I see the Trump Administration is jumping straight to the "acceptance" part - why should they even care, God Emperor Trump will be long gone by the end of the century! It's not his problem!
Good god, I understand the dread of this situation, but everyone gets like this when ever this topic is posted here, the way news is presented nowadays and how miserable everyone's outlook seems to be getting makes me wonder whether or not to go jump off a bridge. I'm not trying to call you out, I just don't want to sink in all this despair that's been going around.
I won't issue Acceptance till I hear conservative leaders say "climate change is real, is caused by humans, is a major threat, and should be addressed head on." I think we might be at bargaining because I've heard conservative leaders pussyfoot around it like well the climate is changing but not because of us or not because of CO2. Which is a step above outright denial but still steps below complete acceptance. But hey at this rate we might see the Republicans accept the reality in time to pass the bill that builds a levee around the State of Miami!
I was just on a flight from Seattle to Denver, and there was smoke from several wildfires dotting the horizon across the whole flight. I remember just a few years ago we didn't have a "wildfire season".
Wildfires have always been seasonal. They're just getting larger/faster.
So we're just going to lie down and take it. That's the American spirit.
If only Trump had the same motivation at preventing an issue of this magnitude as he did at prevent evil scary brown people from crossing the border. Oh, wait, that requires actual leadership and effort.
The sudden change in atmospheric composition/temperature so fast compared to the normal geological shifts is what worries me immensely. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropocene
