Of course, the devil is the "smearing" the Church is receiving and not the kiddie fiddlers.
So... ...Not going to actually do anything about it?
Literally thoughts and prayers
I mean, no shit. To actually be religious, you have to genuinely believe in other-worldly forces interfering like this. Otherwise, it's nothing more than a membership card and a funny hat.
You know, actually threatening people with immediate punishment instead of covering it up for decades might curb some peoples temptation somewhat.
That's the thing. Structures of abuse will remains unless the abusers along with their enablers are removed as well as prevented from holding power. Power structures that enable the harming of vulnerable to the favor of those the system is stalwart for, are designed to do such. Only dismantling such a system and rebuilding without such volatile stewards is the start of making a system to protect the vulnerable.
Francis asked for prayers so the church becomes ever more aware of its “guilt, errors and abuses committed in the present and the past and is committed to combat it without fail to prevent evil from prevailing.” Lol get the fuck out of here. We are all aware, now do something about it.
Speaking about it in a homily does not mean he or the church will not do anything about it.
TBH though the pope's prayers are pretty high level.
I mean technically he is punishing it. Fighting the devil literally means their looking for people committing the assaults and accusing them as worshiping the devil in order to exorcise them. It only goes to show that people who commit such heinous acts are either assholes or satanic worshipers in Francis's eyes. What else do you want him to say? He isn't covering it up, it's gone by another name to fit the ideals of the Vatican. It sounds weird because its not carried by law officials as of now, but that's what's going on.
well unlike others he has actually done quite a lot about it even though this specific instance is literally thoughts and prayers. I don't think blaming this on the devil is right in any regards. This is a failure of moral responsibility that streatches straight to the top and not some divine test.
