Depends. The seats are basically harnesses so it's safe from hard stops and minor collisions.

The Model S is a very safe car but the rear seats are still kind of a "use at your own risk" thing since the overall safety of the car is ment for the main cabin. If you get seriously rear ended by a large truck or something there's a chance the passengers will be injuried/killed.
