Absolutely horrible. I heard they didnt detect the tsunami "because it was too close".
They really need to overhaul their detection methods.
I believe you heard wrong. From reading Wikipedia's page, the tsunami was detected and a warning was issued.
However, a multitude of factors combined to make the warnings less effective. The earthquake was preceded by several foreshocks that were strong enough to generate their own tsunamis - an all-clear was given about half an hour before the main earthquake hit, which may have given a false sense of security for people who did not receive the second set of warnings. The tsunamis were substantially larger than expected - Palu was forecast for a half-meter tsunami, but got a six-meter tsunami. Between the foreshocks and the main earthquake, there was substantial damage to the cellular network, which prevented many people from receiving alerts. Finally, it's unclear just how many of the casualties were from the tsunami, how many were from the earthquakes, and how many were from soil liquefaction events (which were reportedly quite serious).
