And I thought it was bad when UKIP said they didn't want immigrants from "bongo bongo land."
Is Jar Jar Binks from the People's Republic of Jam Jar?
If anybody's interested, Rees-Mogg is on LBC live in 30 minutes. I've set a reminder, as he'll likely be asked about this. LBC is pretty fucking great:

Just saw this message pop up on the livestream...

Wow.
Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya
Libya literally has Jam in it's name, and it's not easily pronounced or memorable either. If you take offence to this then please attend your nearest safespace.
They changed the name after Gaddafi got whacked.
I try not to hate people but Reece Mogg is someone I genuinely detest.
Like Trump and Boris are stupid, Reece Mogg is evil.
I don't actually think Boris is stupid at all, but I agree that he has some similarities to Trump. Rees-Mogg is better at presentation, but underneath, I'd argue he's worse, yeah. Trump genuinely is retarded though, unlike Boris and Moggy.
Rees-Mogg's voting record speaks for itself tbh. Boris puts out the image of a buffoon, but he's a conspiring little shit too.
It's at the very least extremely arrogant of him to call it that, as if he is saying that getting a country's name incorrect on purpose is fine as long as it's "not an important country."
Pro discourse tip, making free safespace jokes doesnt make your point stronger. It just makes you look like an ass.
Boris is just a sophist, sprinkling big words trying to sound intelligent. Anyone with a memory can do that. All aesthetic with no substance.
Politically he doesn't seem too savvy, he's shot himself in the foot regarding his PM ambitions with constant gaffs and a complete lack of integrity. He supported deregulating the banks before and after the 2008 crash caused by deregulated banks. As a Mayor he wasted hundereds of millions. He's corrupt and spineless. Nothing but a veneer.
Or maybe he is intelligent and realised none of this matters because he has achieved celebrity status (same could be said for Trump though?).
Trump can't even use small words correctly though, what with 'bigly', 'surity' and mispronouncing 'anonymous' TWICE IN A ROW. I don't think Boris is hugely smart, or anything, but using less commonly known words correctly requires a modicum of intellect that Trump has never possessed.
Yeah you're right, I think perhaps I am being unfair and incorrect in calling him totally stupid.
And he talks specifically about Libya under Gaddafi, not the present day state. I see no reason why would anyone take offense in this.
Jamahiriya is a made up expression by Gaddafi, describing his own ideology. It doesn't relate to Libyan culture or identity in any way.
That's a massive stretch and you fucking know it
I was a Libya nerd for quite a while after the revolution, and although I think Rees Mogg is a scumbag and that the point he was making here about the "people's vote" is extremely dumb, I gotta agree, what he said isn't actually that bad.
Although you'd initially think it's insulting to Libya, this is actually a bit like referring to Nazi Germany as 'The Turd Reich'. AFAIK Jamahiriya is indeed a made-up word that Gaddafi invented to describe his bullshit fascist political system. I don't think many Libyans would shed a tear upon hearing that someone had called it a silly name. I might be wrong though, I guess it could be taken as an insult to their whole language
When Godfrey Bloom from UKIP talked about 'bongo bongo land' he was insulting an entire continent, here Rees Mogg is only insulting the former Gaddafi regime
To be fair, he has a point: Hitler primarily hated jews, romani, and slavs. He didn't have quite as much hatred for every other non-white people group in existence as modern neo-nazis do. So from their deranged, ultra-white-nationalist perspective, he was a big softie.
I think you're correct, but it was still shocking to see such honesty. I'm so used to having to interpret dog-whistles that for somebody to come out and say that made me double-take and then recoil from the screen.
It's almost as if politicians from both the USA and the UK are participating in a contest to see who can make the most retarded statement on Earth.
They're both winning
