HOSUTON - Texas has set a new voter registration record of 15.6 million people ahead of the highly anticipated Senate race between Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and Democratic Rep.
Beto O'Rourke.
Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos told the Houston Chronicle that the state's voter rolls have grown by 1.6 million since the last midterm election in 2014. Election records show
that Texas has seen a 400,000-voter increase since March. The state on average added just over 100,000 voters a year between 2002 and 2014.
"Recently, we have heard from a number of county election officials who tell us they are witnessing voter registration rates and voter enthusiasm in a midterm year that we usually see
before presidential-year elections, which is phenomenal," Pablos said. "On the whole, we are seeing Texans become more engaged, which is very healthy for the future of our state."
Harris County had 55,000 voters register over the past six months, which is more than any other county. Suburban counties near Houston have seen pronounced voter growth, with
rolls in Fort Bend and Montgomery counties growing by 3 percent. Collin and Denton counties north of the Dallas-Fort Worth area saw voter registration spike by almost 4 percent.
Hays County saw the biggest gain since March with a 4.4 percent increase in the number of registered voters.
Fort Bend, Collin and Hays counties are all part of congressional districts with competitive races for Congress, particularly where Republicans may face some of their stiffest
opposition.
"Competitive elections increase voter interest," said Brandon Rottinghaus, a political scientist at the University of Houston. But the surge in voter registration doesn't provide much
clarity on who will show up to cast a ballot.
Only 4.7 million of the 14 million registered voters in 2014 took to the polls. Voter turnout is usually much higher in presidential cycles, reaching nearly 60 percent in 2016 and 2012.
Voters can register through Oct. 9, which is the deadline to vote in the midterms.
It kinda amazing how the 2016 shitshow election and current occupation of the whitehouse has ultimately helped to invigorate young voters to become more active, and especially how it has caused there to be a major boost in the awareness and perceived importance of Congressional and other nonexecutive elections.
Can't wait for Texas to ban barbecue after O'Rourke wins.
The absolute eldritch horror of taco and tofu stands on every corner.
and for some reason medicare for all to treat everyone both psychologically and physically.
Avocados MANDATED on Tacos and Mexican blend cheese outlawed because Texas is gonna become California 2.0
Boy that's a lot of illegal immigrants registering to vote.
It sounds like sarcasm, but you know that this is going to be the conspiracy if Cruz loses in the general.
And how many of those are people who have been dead since before the turn of the millenium?
i remember when roy moore lost and people created a conspiracy that dems bussed in thousands of minorities from neighboring states all just to vote to make sure roy moore didn't win, that was pretty funny
This dem candidate is like some kind of master of public opinion, we'll call him Public Master Beto
Just to reiterate the usual line:
If anyone here is thinking that "There's 400 000 new voters, I think I'll just stay home, I've done my part" or something like that, don't.
Turning Texas blue is amazing in its own right, but with a guy like Beto? Even better.
Get out there and vote people
How many people really see these articles? I seriously doubt a single person who looks at this forum from Texas will not vote because of this.
You never know, I'm just acting based on how certain people have acted here in my own experience.
Is this the blue wave or the dead rising?
Could be both, skeletons know the value of universal healthcare.
I was formerly from Texas and that would put me at relief. I would then have to remind myself to not let that data persuade me that the situation is any less dire, even with that burgeoning fact.
It's funny but pathetic because they actually believe it.
On the whole, we are seeing Texans become more engaged, which is very healthy for the future of our state."
if Beto gets elected because of this I bet they suddenly enact more voter ID shenanigans.
The Texas Lieutentant Governor race is competitive, and the Texas Lieutenant Governor is the most powerful in the country, they can control debates and bog down the legislature to stop that.
ya but if voter disenfranchisement wasn't working enough to offset the liberal takeover then what else can they do? look at how scared the florida GOP is about giving back the right to vote to the 20% of the black male population.
I was apparently registered automatically
I don't know why, maybe its just a tarrant county thing.
First they banned bbq
then they initiated Sharīʿah law
