It's kind of wild we're finally reaching that point where the batch of early 2000s and 3D games in general are now being covered by AVGN.
Its the same feeling when you hear 90s grunge music on your classic rock radio station.
People have a pretty solid definition that retro cuts off at N64, but we're going to be reaching a point where AVGN is reviewing games that I would consider "recent" but are actually now older than games when he started and as time creeps on the definition of retro starts being more of an arbitrary cut-off than an objective measure of time.
I'm just waiting until he reviews boogie on the wii
As a child of the 90s, I totally remember Tomb Raider and just how fucking huge Lara Croft was a pop culture icon. It was bizarre.
I remember the ton of lucozade ads she was associated with.
She's on Lucozade ads right now.
I was the only one in my class that knew the nude lara cheat. I still haven't told anyone.
Lara Croft's bust was a pop culture phenomenon. I really like the production values on the recent AVGN episodes.
Lara Croft used to be fun, but then they made her serious because "character development" and shit.
I remember how Superman 64 had only fairly recently turned 9 years old when the AVGN video on it had released, something of which the Nerd acknowledged in the episode.
Now, some games like Sonic 06 are even older than that, and other infamous ones like Rogue Warrior are getting there.
If James is still making AVGN episodes in 2020 he has to make a callback to the Street Fighter 2020 video.
He's actually aged quite well. He looks pretty much the same as he did when I was watching him as a literal child.
For whatever reason, AVGN format aged so well. The new episodes are as enjoyable as the classic ones, and I'm not even wearing nostalgia goggles.
It's unusual to say, but I'm really glad that James Rolfe doesn't upload AVGN as often. It's probably the reason why he's able to refine and fine-tune his work in order to make the best episode possible without worrying too much about time constraints to an extent.
I'm also loving the obvious hole in the travellers backpack that allows him to stuff all the replica weapons inside, allowing them to drop right through and onto the floor below.
You can tell he enjoys doing it, and revels in the silly poor practical effects and after effects
Does anyone remember the Overanalyzers
Stuff like this makes me wish the fun classic Lara would come back to the forefront of the series. I did like the modern reboot trilogy, but it's time for the series to return to its roots. It needs to take itself less seriously, put aside the family drama stuff, and focus on being fun. I mean the original game had freaking dinosaurs in it. That should set the tone for the series.
That quote of Andy Sandham caught me by surprise. He's an old teacher of mine.
Very nice, but there can be only one true Tomb Raider retrospective:

Honestly I enjoyed the first 2 new reboot games(haven't played Shadow yet) but I just find it annoying that they spent an entire trilogy building up an origin story when the first game was good enough for that and I'm pretty sure it was originally intended to just be that. It even ended with her dual wielding like in the classic games.
Everyone has to be serious in a grim world like batman because everyone recognizes batman so it saves all the time spent for character development
Even if they we're trying to copy the Uncharted format, Nathan Drake was never serious and always popping off jokes and having a fun adventure.
I think one of the reasons why AVGN doesnt age is that the premise; the Nerd playing bad video-games and complaining about them, doesnt get old. There were shitty games, there are shitty games and there will be shitty games. And there will be people who buy them and rage and rant over how much of a shitload of fuck they are.
Another reason I can think of is that the games he plays are very varied. They have different themes, gameplay and reasons as to why they are bad. Some are glitchy as fuck, some have assholistical level desing and some games' difficulty is a bunch shit-stairs on a 60 storey shit-scraper.
He's definitely had his moments, though. Like the Glitch Gremlin or Shitpickle being pure distilled annoyance.
