https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1038187/red-october-aims-to-force-duterte-to-declare-martial-law-afp -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The “Red October” ouster plot against President Rodrigo Duterte is meant to push him to declare martial law nationwide, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Carlito Galvez Jr. said Tuesday. “Ang nakikita namin (What we are seeing) is the President is being dragged to declare martial law nationwide, [and] most probably a revolutionary government,” Galvez said during a Senate hearing on the budget of the Department of National Defense. The AFP believes that the communists are trying to form a coalition with the opposition and previous government destabilizers while setting a trap for Duterte
Considering that you are yourself Filipino, could you provide some context on whether this would be better or worse? I know Duterte is awful, but I imagine a revolutionary, communist government under martial law would be 100x worse.
Probably would end up just being a different flavor of awful.
Just sounds to me like a textbook false flag attack to me, much like the Turkish one two years ago, but this one is almost identical to the Reichstag fire in that it's a nationalist president clamping down on all the left wing parties in the nation.
People here have different ways of interpreting it. But. Most people agree that its pretty much the starting fuse for a Philippine Civil War between RevoltGOV and Loyalists.
I'm sorry to hear that, dude. Stay safe. <3
This is pretty much accurate. I'm just hoping it actually doesn't succeed and become our own Reichstag fire here. Duterte for the longest time ever since he won the presidency, he's been pretty much praising Ferdinand Marcos, our dictator for 2 decades from the 60s to the 80s, infamously silencing the press, the common folk and declared Martial Law nationwide, and proud of the fact he has been a friend during their younger era. Duterte was the one who pushed for a 'hero's burial' for Marcos after being sworn in, and prior to it his body was in Hawaii where he and his thieving family hid from the Philippines after being ousted from their power after the People Power Revolution. In the late 90s, his family was preserved in a family crypt, and recently in 2016 after plenty of controversy, buried here in the Philippines' Heroes' Cemetery. It's sadly really easy to manipulate the masses here due to an unfortunate fact that a large chunk of the population are in extreme poverty and lack even basic education, and it's very easy to win their vote and mold their worldview towards someone's agenda. It's honestly ridiculous and his die-hard supporters are eating it up. Like as if the Communist Party here will be teaming up with the Liberal Party (the previous administration, and also mind you despite the name, they're closer to centrism/big-tent than a left-wing party even, and are vehemently against the Communist Party historically as well and labeled them as terrorists.) I hope nothing comes out of this and Duterte's dumb false flag plan will fizzle out, because when the ISIS attacks happened here in Mindanao, Duterte jumped right up on the opportunity to enact Martial Law there. It's been almost a year now since the Battle of Marawi and while dealing with ISIS is necessary, there's no doubt about it too that Duterte took advantage of the terrorist attacks to further his complete control over the region. A nationwide Martial Law is repeating history and it's the scariest part about it when it happens again. Duterte's getting desperate, realizing his war on drugs is failing, he's driving the economy down hard, his tax plan is hilariously awful, the poor just got even poorer, basic commodities are getting more expensive, he's trying everything to conjure up false evidence just to try and further his own megalomaniac goals, even if it means conjuring up such a ridiculous plot to do so.
I knew and were friends with a few Filipino people growing up, and it's pretty sad to see your country succumb to this. Every single Filipino person I knew was incredibly kind and optimistic, so to see the actual country get fooled/swindled into supporting someone who is the polar opposite of that, is just heartbreaking. Those that take advantage of the very things that they should be aiming to fix, such as poverty and lack of education as you mentioned, and use it for their own personal gain, are the absolute worst dredges of society.
It really is frustrating. One of the things I do love about this place is as you said, plenty of people are warm and kind and usually have a positive outlook on things. Throw everything at them and they'll get up and carry on. Unfortunately most get manipulated and lead towards a false promise of success for them, their family, their friends and their fellow citizens. Yet in reality they are just being manipulated to boost someone's selfish goals rather than actually helping out everyone towards a good future. I hope things don't escalate for the worst, and hopefully things do get better, and at the very least if history is about to repeat itself, I hope it will also repeat the success of overthrowing a tyrant's control in a peaceful manner and rally up a call of unity towards all the people again, and hopefully to not continue a vicious cycle.
Yeah, a good amount of them (including some of my cousins, uncles, and aunts) still support Duterte. I don't know why and how they got swindled.
It's so bizarre, because all of the Filipino people I knew were extraordinarily religious, and weren't just acting it, but were actually going around helping people out, going on "missions" and so on. So to see the Filipino people in the Philippines themselves, back someone who goes against all that just doesn't make sense to me. At least the Americans supporting people such as Trump don't tend to actually practice what they preach...
