Jesus. I still remember the awkwardness of calling my local Toys R Us to see how long they were open (google said they were still up despite the company shutdown) and having an annoyed employee explain that in two weeks the store was closing forever. I wonder if any of those people will get their jobs back?
If this is them pulling a Hostess to dump their workers and weasel out of their lease I will never give them a dime.
It was more about dumping debt. They bought Toys R Us, transferred their debt to it, and filed bankruptcy.
The one near me didn't even sell the fixtures, or anything really.
They had "clearance" and "going out of business" signs up for a long time, every time I stopped in the store was just a messy trainwreck being held down by 2 or 3 people with everything at 10% off.. Which is still vastly more expensive than any other stores. They also had signs up to sell the fixtures, in which I had asked them about purchasing some and they said "We aren't exactly ready to get rid of them, come talk to us in about a month" twice in a row. I'm thinking it was a way to close down stores and wiggle out of some stuff.
I don’t know what person dumbly convince them to do this. Despite trouble they make themselves in last few years.
seems like that popup toy store idea thar one investor was trying to do might happen after all, I mean that's the only way this survives moving forward.
This was the plan all along, wasn't it? Weasel out of the debt and dump the employee out, and then revive it.

Then let some dipshit managers keep all the employee records on file, unredacted in the abandoned store for anyone to break in and steal.
Maybe they'll transition to adult toys only
Ah yes, I can see it now. Toys 'N Us
Toys Up Arse
More like Toys 'N Uts
I wonder if US Toys "R" Us And the internatonal Toys "R" Us stores are under separate companies since those are still running last i checked.
If not it might give them a base from which to rebuild.
I can confirm that the fixtures are still intact at my local Toys R Us, they even still have power running because the lights are turning on and off on a timer.
Note: I did not actually break into the store to notice this, it just happens to be plainly visible from my regular commute.
