I wouldn't might standing desks if everything was at a good level but that photo in the article hurts my back and neck..
I can easily stand for hours in the same place, as compared to sitting, I go to many gigs where I stand for 5hours+ in the same spot.
I got flat feet so while walking is alright, standing still is a fucking pain for me, so I'll pass
Life isbad for humans. Death ia the ultimate rest. We certainly aren't gonna complain then!
I have a standing desk at my office and i also bought motorized legs for my desk at home. I like it a lot, and i hardly ever feel stiff anymore from sitting in one place. That being said you have to actually have it set up right unlike the picture used on the article. I don't know why they couldn't get a picture of someone standing up straight unless they were intentionally trying to make standing desks look bad.
I definitely agree with this part of the article though, you gotta move around. Im sure standing still for 8-9 hours a day is just as bad for you as sitting for the same amount of time.
Thus, rather than sitting or standing for hours at a stretch, experts believe that it is more important to move about regularly during the day, and also include exercise in one's daily routine.
Researchers found that the quality of evidence was low because the studies were poorly designed and had too few participants.
If they're taking the desk in the article as the 'standard' standing desk then yeah, standing desks aren't good for you.
Is it japan where they have mandated excercise at work? That should be a thing everywhere.
Yep, I love my motorized standing desk at home. Sometimes after just sitting for a while I need a break but continue working, and pressing a single button to have it raise up is great.
let's try lying desks next
Exercise bike desks.
You must peddle too keep your computer operating. Good luck.
idk about MANDATED that sounds like an ADA violation
This isn't such a bad idea, though. It would lower electrical costs for a given business, increase physical activity among desk workers, and potentially drive innovation in the ultra-low-power computing technology space. Only issues would noise, cost, and maybe the riots that would ensue as you force office workers to actually exercise for once
Walking is infinitely better for you than standing. I worked a job where I would stand in one spot for 8 hours and another one where I would walk for 8 hours.
After one shift of the walking job I needed to have a good sit for an hour and then I was ready to do other things while after the standing job I was fucking done for the whole day
we got desks that can adjust to insane levels thanks to a nice motor in the stand, i'm preeeetty tall so these desks are pretty nice
then again there's a guy at my job who's at least two heads taller than i am and he can work comfortably on it so
they're pretty good
i'm just enjoying having the option tbh
Standing desks are a pain to use. All you really need imo is regular breaks from sitting, just get up and walk around a bit every hour or two.
By mandated I meant the company has to do an excercise break for the day, I remember seeing videos of it. I don’t think you’re forced to follow along.
from personal experience, Microsoft handles this sort of stuff the best way.
every single computer on a Microsoft campus interrupts you every hour or so with a 2 minute silent auto-playing video that has a stretching exercise. in order to dismiss this window you have to click a button that says "I did these exercises"

Is the jury still out on squatting attachments for office chairs ?
They're really only a pain if you have the non motorized kind. When you just have a few presets and have your whole desktop mounted to it they're pretty solid and easy to use.
Why stand or sit when you can just lie down and work.

The office where I worked last year had those desks with motorized legs and I was the only one using it in the standing position.
Yeah standing still for long stretches for time is a pain, but with an office job a standing desk creates a smaller barrier for getting up and moving about.
Especially for me as an animator I had to get up frequently to walk about to internalize some animations. Then one of the teams set up a pull-up bar at one of the office's VR-rooms and I would occasionally get up to use that.
This year I got myself an exercise ball at home to use in lieu of a chair and it gives a lot of the benefits that standing does, though I feel it even more in my core and back.
And what I've noticed is that the barrier for getting up and moving about is also a lot smaller with the exercise ball due to how much more active my body is.
Like if I decide to get up after a work day and scoot off to the store I have to resist the urge to run all the way after sitting on the exercise ball, whereas if I've sat all day on a chair my body feels stiff and tired when walking.
They have a radio calisthenics program that that shift of workers do, but it really isn't exercise more of a stretching program. NHK broadcasts a version for the general public every morning.
At my old job I got given a standing desk. I used it like once until I was sitting down again. Pretty pointless IMO unless you're demoing something to someone.
