https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-45745362 Video streaming service Netflix is the world's most data-hungry application, consuming 15% of global net traffic, according to research from bandwidth management company Sandvine. Video in general accounts for more than half of net traffic, it suggests. Other media streaming such as embedded video on websites accounts for 13.1%, YouTube, 11.4% and web browsing, 7.8%.
Who knew give people viewing power and choices would be popular, a mystery for the ages.
Netflix and YouTube are by far my primary websites for entertainment. Netflix actually has a ton of great original shows/movies too.
Netflix is annoying because sometimes they only contract movies to be on there for like a month. Batman Begins and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas being two recent examples.
I suppose that's not necessarily their fault though. Permanent licences probably cost significantly more.
Would be nice if they had an 'available until' thing, so you could know when to watch things to not miss 'em. Several times have I checked netflix, noted a movie is on there, then a week or two later sit down to watch it only to be gone.
I've noticed Netflix do this a few times, but only when the deadline is really near. Like, end-of-the-week near. Would be nice if they always showed the available-until date, regardless of the distance from it.
and 90% of my data
It would be nice if Danish Netflix had a selection in the first place.
Wonder when this model is going to change. I don't know anyone who pirates music since Spotify came around, surely it would work just as well for the film industry? I have a Netflix sub but the content list in Sweden is so shit that I still often have to rent/pirate the movie I want to see anyway.
Would be nice if we didn't have to pay more for less too.
Netflix on the Xbone has that
It's not surprising, it's basically replaced broadcast television for most people under 30.
Why use cable/satellite when the companies behind it are scumfuck cunts and the service is absolute GARBAGE
lol imagine like waiting for what you want to watch to come on lmfao
Haha, you guys should see how bare bones netflix au is. Its embarrassing.
i've turned all the itunes gift cards i've gotten as birthday presents over the past decade, which i would have otherwise considered useless, into effectively endless movie rentals. if i can't find a movie on netflix or hulu, chances are i can find it for a $4 rental
Now that I think about it, it's because youtube is anal about cutting costs. They're actually really good at reducing bandwidth usage. Check the stat overlay on any youtube video and see what they're doing. Quality depends on viewport and speed, doesn't do further loading if video is paused, and most importantly the compresion step when uploading. All I've heard that Netflix does is sometimes ask "are you still there?" in between episodes when autoplaying some show's entire season. And probably not compressed to all hell.
Guess that could explain why my viewings have buffered for a couple of years. Still that's a lot, even compared to YT that had videos get views at tens of billions. Also am I going crazy or is the BBC logo glitching out on the page? It's flicking like mad.
It's flickering because it's a looping 2 frame video lmao https://cdn.iframe.ly/files/18a1e95b67897c00556ef55f678a0624.mp4
Heck even my parents which are well over 50 ditched regular TV in favor of Netflix and Amazon Prime.
I want to say this is likely a marketing move, since they want to preserve the image that they're always trying to keep every title available indefinitely and renew every contract possible. In a lot of cases I think they do just that - titles only get pulled when they can't reach an agreement before the end of the contract.
they can't keep getting away with this gross depletion of megabytes
Man, every single time I write "Top 10 horror movies in Netflix" or something, NONE of them are in the finnish version. EVERY TIME.
Why isn't it a picture then? Did the author try to post a video to go with it but forgot how to video upload? It's bonkers how some articles or FB posts I see do this an it's a disgrace to the basics of content creation.
I find netflix's selection to be so damn weird. Pretty much any film series is there, but only about 1/3 of actual movies. Last time I checked only 2 of the terminator films are there (and not like, only the new ones, I think its T3 and then the latest one).
In my experience netflix is shit in the UK, extremely limited and things tend to just disappear.
Netflix videos are definitely much better quality than Youtube. It can run near Blu-ray quality, only being able to see the difference if you start looking for artifacts. Plus they do carry surround audio tracks on some videos.
