Dear readers,
I am currently busy with the creation and development of a server. At the moment people can just go to your workshop and simply download all the .gma files to get all the models and extract (gmad) the file to use it for themselfs.
Now I am wondering if there is another way to have the players download content as player models without having the ability to use it for themself or their own server.
Now I've seen servers that will save the models/content in your cache which you cannot seem to open.

not gonna answer on that...
if you have a server that uses workshop items the server uses a workshop collection. every person has free access to that workshop collection otherwise they couldnt get the addons. every addon they download they get on their pc, by using a extractor they can extract all files from sounds, lua files to models. Nothing is encrypted or anything, everything is open source.
So no, you cant let players download content without being able to use it for themself.

I was more asking for other options other than using the steam workshop.
Like there is already a possibility to have the server communicate with scripts on a webserver, which is ofcourse protected, on the start of the server. People who try to 'steal' cant because it is 'hidden' on your web server.
well that stuff would only be serverside then. everything thats clientside, the client WILL have, all open to see if they want. serverside stuff is easy to protect, but clientside is just open for everyone
the client will quite literally not be able to see the model at all if you do not send it to their computer. as long as you need them to see it, it will get out, and someone will be able to "steal" it for themselves.
here's a suggestion: worry less about players "stealing" your models and more about making the server fun
I do not really care about the fact that other communities may steal models or not. It is just sad for the people that make them and spend their time on it to be used by everyone. This topic was meant to ask if there are alternatives to prevent it from happening.
