For example, could one watch porn on their wifi? I'm assuming they will try to make it so you don't pirate shit but I guess I'm curious about where exactly the line is.
half the times i've heard of someone getting busted for piracy, it's been at a university
however, they will give 0 shits about pornography
Just get a cheap VPN (AirVPN, NordVPN, PrivateInternetAccess) and have peace of mind my dude.
Really depends on the school and whether management has decided to grace your IT department with any SSL interception equipment or whatnot. Never really heard of one giving a shit about porn though.
Pirates = no
Pussy = yes
The give zero shits about pornography, though that doesn't mean that people won't know you're looking at porn. Don't torrent if you pirate things, though they're less likely to notice/care if you direct download something that would be considered piracy. Remember that people on your network can probably see whatever sites you're going to. Set up HTTPS everywhere and use a tunnel for anything you wouldn't want people knowing about.
I have an ODROID set up at my parents' house with linux installed and SSH set up on it, and tunnel through it quite often for privacy purposes.
Careful though, HTTPS alone won't protect you from profiling by people on your subnet unless you also set up DNS over TLS. If you use standard DNS people can still see which websites you visit. (Though they won't know the full url, only the domain name, eg facepunch.com)
As someone who works in IT at a university I can confirm this.
If you pirate you will get caught and have to deal with all kinds of shit.
Definitely keep jackin it tho.
Because the university can get in all kinds of trouble if found piriting content.
My old university just blocked torrents. So I'd pay for a server off site to do it, and securely download it from there
I saw some guy looking at sonic inflation porn on DeviantArt in the computer lab at uni once.
There was also some guy who went into an empty lecture hall and used the the computer there to watch porn. Unfortunately for him, there was initially a lecture scheduled at that time which had been called off but it was set to automatically livestream the lecture on BlackBoard. So as long as you're not an idiot like that guy, you should be fine.
