Welcome to the System Shock: Adventure Alpha! Backers will be able to freely traverse Citadel Station, pick up items, listen to audio logs, read emails and complete the game’s objectives from start to finish.
These are the original textures and not final art. Not only will these re-tooled textures make the Adventure Alpha more interesting but it will provide the team with a blueprint of how to approach updated art, lighting, level design, and more.
Didn't the team for this break up?
Either way, this is a really pleasant surprise.

I don't think they broke up, they instead scrapped a lot of what they had made and went back to the drawing board because they were getting far too ambitious and straying off the path of what they had originally intended.
Oh. Well at least this mean's it's still a thing, and will probably be more true to the source material, too
Basically instead of a reimagining, it's gonna be more of a HD Remake similar to what was originally planned. Definitely looks promising even with stock textures slapped everywhere.
Curious to see what the scary space ladies will look like
They scared the shit out of me as a kid
Arent scary space ladies from aystem shock 2
System shock one has scary space dudes
They've stated this is not what the final game will look like visually, and that certain places may see changes to their level design.
Still though, this is a very good sign of what's to come in the future.
Oh wow, I just instantly fell in love with the song. Anyone knows what it is?
It's their rendition of the medical deck theme from the original game.

I really think the 1:1 remake concept is a bad idea, I said this before and I'll say it again, the boxy video gamey geometry of the first game doesn't really suit the HD realistic textures and models, it looks really really uncanny and weird to me. And I can't pin why, everything looks artificial and not in a thematically appropriate way.
I concur. The enhanced edition is now as good as OG System Shock gets, if you want that then it's right there. The reimagining could've been an opportunity to make what the original could only portray abstractly with well-placed props into a tangible thing. For some reason, one of System Shock's greatest criticisms is the level design being "labyrinthine" and a fresh coat of paint could've really dispelled that surface level illusion because I think it's extremely progressive level design for the year that brought us Doom 2's Downtown map.
Their comment on youtube:
These are the original levels using the original textures from the game. The purpose of this alpha is to rebuild all the levels 1:1 and be able to complete all the objectives necessary to finish the game.
This alpha is probably just a way for them to check if movement etc. feel right. They also stated that
in the final version of the game, you’ll be able to switch between the modern remake look of the game and the original 90s retro assets wherever possible
so it'll probably look more like their unreal engine preview from a year ago:

Look familar? No. Not really. While they share the same aesthetic style. The spaces are wide, open, and detailed. My point is that the geometry isn't due to any sort of artistic merit, it's due to the limitations of the era. I feel like even that concept art wouldn't be possible if they stuck to the old geometry of the orginals. My opinion is that they shouldn't have to restrict themselves to the limitations of the old game.
Just put some stairs and railings in the game and it'll look fine. I've never seen a place as handicap accessible as the original Citadel Station with all the ramps. The only problem is they were mostly 45 degree angle slopes so its like unless you're jacked as fuck you ain't getting up to that control panel, crippleboy. Call me old fashioned but I doubt by 2072 we'll be that handicap friendly on Earth, let alone on a corporate space station.
I would argue that the cramped design of citadel station actually adds some realism to it. Its a space station, they are supposed to utilise every inch of the space as effectively as possible.
I do agree that what theyve shown in the video looks a little sterile, but as somebody said before, some railings here and there will do wonders. I really think they just need to add a bit of detail to those levels and it will be fine. The level design in the original game was very solid, and I would not want them to just throw it away to "make spaces more wide" or something. 1:1 remake with some more debris and less monotone environment is the way to go IMO.
