• User blocking Browser addon.

Since the ignore/block function hasn't been added in newpunch, I made this browser addon; it's only for Firefox and chrome right now. Here is a picture of the addon in action ( I chose the thread and user at random): https://i.imgur.com/JGtoMdo.png As shown in the picture, it hides both posts and quotes from any user you add to the block list. Download links: Firefox version: https://my.mixtape.moe/zxgadg.zip Chrome version: https://my.mixtape.moe/bqqpjz.zip TOS: You can freely distribute or modify this, as long as you give me credit for the original. Strong suggestions: Don't talk about people you blocked. Don't announce to someone that you are going to block them. Blocking staff members is probably described as a "bad idea".   Important note: These addons were only tested in the most recent versions of the browsers. If your version is older they may may not work properly   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After downloading the file, unzip it and follow the installation instructions for your browser. Once you installed it then you can click on the extension icon in the toolbar to add or remove people from the block list.   I didn't create a custom icon, so it will be the default one for whatever browser you are using. A green puzzle icon on firefox, and some gray button on chrome.   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   How to install the Firefox version: Drag the .xpi file into a open Firefox window. Firefox will then ask you about the installation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   Installing the chrome Version is a bit more complicated: This link also explains how to install 3rd party chrome addons: https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-install-chrome-extensions-manually/ Inside the zip file there is a folder called "FPHIDECHROME-0.2" Go the chrome extensions page. Enable developer mode (in the upper righthand corner of the extensions page). Click open unpacked addon. Select "FPHIDECHROME-0.2" as the extension directory (if you renamed the folder you upacked you must select that instead). This will install the addon.

It's funny how we have to resort to making third-party addons just to implement a feature that should be built into the website by default, but isn't because the development is so painfully slow.
There may be some issues with the addon, for instance I'm not sure if it hides the reply button on "hidden" posts. Should the addon even do that? I'll -plan to think about fixxing the issues them later.
A few things: I forgot to mention that this addon will probably break on some forum update in the future. I have no idea if there are things that should be added to this. I haven't used ignore user stuff, so I have no comparison. And I'm not going to be using this addon, so I won't notice any performance issues. On a less important note, it looked like this screenshot : was taken from a mobile. For obvious reasons I need someone else to check if it works on mobile. If it does work then that was completely by accident.

Huh?
theft
We FOSS now
That word is inaccurate for a lot of computer related stuff. Piracy or copyright violation are more accurate terms. In this case however, none of those words applies.
Also, @Inacio : Were you using the addon on mobile? It would actually be really weird if someoen were to violate that copyright/tos/hatever. It's free software. so Either they want to steal credit for something like 20(10? 30?) minutes total worth of coding. Or maybe its something like "boy, oh boy, I love violating TOS. I'm really sticking it to the man when I go 1 km above the speed limit". I wouldn't even be annoyed. i'd be like "Why would you even go out of your way to do that?"
Big thanks, going to block everyone who rated your post baby immediately https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/225137/96e1eec1-093c-4d1a-bc10-d1b190c4f833/image.png That and probably people that disagree with me. Thank you asic! Your contributions to this forum have been amazing.
The thing is that yes, it would be handy for troll accounts. But the reason people hate the existence of a block function like this is because a lot of people abuse it. And for those people it's the same as a kid putting his hand on his ears and making noise to ignore the "bad things". I'm pretty sure that if coin slut is actually serious, he'll block me just for saying this for example.
Would be alright if it just collapsed posts instead of outright removing your ability to read them. If you did block someone, and there was a post you wanted to read, having to jump through hoops to be able to read the post isn't very pleasurable 4chanX filters relatively work the same way, and I suppose when you collapse a post on reddit, but that does the entire comment chain, as their content is non-linear (so it won't work the same here)
So, do you think I should add that collapsing functionality to the addon? Anyways, for now you can still open the the post in another browser. or take them off the ignore list temporarily.
From what I remember of interacting with him in the past, coin slut isn't being serious. I think he's being sarcastic or joking. Maybe exaggerating.
I think they are rating the post "baby" because I am the person who made the addon. These 2 things are also possible: It offends them because they think I will block people, It offends them because they think I will encourage people to block me. A large amount of people aren't going to really hear out arguments. It's not just those people who would abuse the report function. It's like how on reddit (and here) there are a lot of people who don't read past the thread headline.
Could you make one to remove ratings?
https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/242/769/89d.gif Me right now.
I'd rarely use the block function but generally if I do use it, it's just to remove the temptation of replying to people who aren't interested in having an actual discussion or are otherwise arguing primarily to get a rise out of people. There've been times on this forum where people act as provocateurs without breaking any rules technically speaking and it tends to get a lot of people banned for raging at them. I think I've only ever used block once actually and it was to enforce a mentality of 'not don't want to see the content? don't reply' on myself.
yes
I'm wondering, why did you chose to make entire browser extensions instead of userscripts? These are much simpler to install (you can literally make it a 1click install) than browser-specific extensions (your instructions look messy to me), and open-source by definition.
Ok, I'll make a ratings hiding addon later. I didn't think of using userscripts. That's why I didn't do it. If you want I can make a userscript version of this.
I made your addon.
userscripts are zero differences unless there's a feature of vanilla javascript that don't go between the two
