I'm assuming the AMD Ryzen/Radeon Navi rumors are true for the time being.
all i want: backwards compatibility playing with other console + pc users don't change the controller again though i'm not holding my breath on backwards compatibility.
Unless the backwards compatibility does what the Xbox One X did which was increase the rendering resolution, I don't see the point, sure playing it on the same console is fine but, I don't see why people go apeshit over it.
This machine is probably gonna be x86 again so it's possible that it's easier for them to make it BC. As for crossplay, I've said this before their "crossplay beta" with Fortnite but if they make crossplay an actual selling point for their next console then they're absolute scum. It's something they could allow for any game that wants it now so they better not try to convince people otherwise.
Because it's an assurance that your library of games won't be rendered obsolete over time.
I'd prefer to be able to play my ps4 games on stronger harder that realistically, for no reason shouldn't be able to just run the games better, but knowing sony, they will probably make dozens of "PS4 CLASSIC" """remasters""" to release on PS5 featuring horizon zero dawn with a marginally better framerate and god of war with even more detail on kratos' nipple hairs
They make too much on PS Plus they won't do this.
Theyll probably due BC with PS4 games but nothing else. They have no reason too and they have the numbers to back it, PS4 outselling everything proved to them their method works.
I fucking hope so. Whoever announces their next console first almost always loses out in their generation, and Sony's ass needs some kicking considering the shit they've tried to pull recently.
Wii U
If Microsoft keep doing what they have been doing the last 2 or so years with it's brand, I genuinely wish them the best and hope they can humble Sony.
Bernie Stolar can eat shit, given that he was the reason why the Sega Saturn bombed in the US on top of his extraordinary prejudice against 2D games in favor of the new wave of 3D.
Good riddance, PS4. Gen8 was a farce.
Waiting for PSRouter with 100% streamed content. The connection cutting out every 10 minutes is a “feature”
I don't understand this argument, how are your games being made obsolete? Do you not have the previous consoles after the new one comes out? If anything having the new console becoming backwards compatible renders your other consoles obsolete, but your games being unable to be played on the current generation, I don't follow.
It still feels like the generation only just started but it's been 5 years. What the Christ.
Sega Saturn did that to itself in the US. Sega of Japan fucking ruined all aspects of the console during its development, and Sega of America even tried to make deals with Silicon Graphics (who later used the specs to make the N64) and Sony themselves (who later used the exact same proposed specs to make the PS1) The Saturn hardware was extraordinarily flawed when Sega banked on having advanced 2D graphics, and when they saw the PS1 they shoehorned a 3D processor into it, resulting in the Saturn being stupidly hard to develop for. Even worse, Sega of Japan forced the American launch to be rushed, angering retailers to the point of dropping Sega entirely; and Sony pulled the rug from under them with their $299 price tag. Finally, Genesis sales were strong during Christmas '95 in the US, but there wasn't enough supply to meet the demand. This was because SoJ banked so hard on the Saturn based on its Japanese sales (which were pretty good). This caused some more bad blood between the regional offices, and SoJ cleaned out most of the American execs. In the background, Sonic Xtreme got canned, ruining most of Sega's prospects for somehow saving the system internationally. While that "Saturn is not our future" line didn't help, nails were in the coffin for Saturn before Stolar ever showed up at SoA. Sega of Japan ruined everything.
I look at it from the perspective of software preservation. The original hardware will not last forever, especially if it was flawed to begin with (see: early Xbox 360, early PS2, etc). A great example is the OG Xbox. The only survivors will be modded ones. The original HDD's are at a minimum 13 years old at this point, and once it goes, the console is unbootable. Even if you swap the HDD, you need the HDD unlock key, which is stored in EEPROM, restore the OS to the drive, etc. The DVD drive can also fail, and you can only use ones made for the console. Not impossible to rescue, but most of the public will throw them away at this point. And PC emulation is not an option. MS is doing God's work supporting it on the Xbox One. That also assumes someone had the original console to begin with. In examples like the above, working survivors will be harder to find. Because many of the people that already have one, are not interested in selling it. So if you're a younger gamer and want to play this PS2 game you heard was really good and you picked up at a thrift shop for $5, better hope you can find a PS2 and a TV with analog video inputs. Backwards compatibility will also have the luxury of having a modern controller, tv outputs, and the ability to do minor enhancements like improving load times, higher resolutions and widescreen support. Its also 100% legitimate from a legal standpoint, with no grey areas like emulation and downloading ROMs, if the console can even be emulated properly.
I feel like it took too long for this gen to really take off because the game lineup at launch was just business as usual; a new Batman game, a new Assassin's Creed game, a new Call of Duty game, etc. It was like a piddling improvement rather than a revolution like just about every console generation prior.
I'm fairly certain most cheapo TVs still have composite input. I don't know about big fucking 64" 4K monsters though.
we all know that every two generations cycle, it'll flop next generation
The only reason Sega was a major player in the global hardware market was SoA's strategies with the Genesis. They hired an ex-Mattel exec to run the company over here and balked when he said they needed to pack Sonic in with the system for free. They eventually went with his pitch despite their "better judgement" telling them not to and it completely flipped the market on its head. Fast forward five years and SoJ had managed to convince themselves that they deserved credit for the progress made, and actively sabotaged the American division's attempts to steer the company. Sega had only just developed a winning culture and the completely burned it down to nothing again.
The fact games are taking longer to make doesn't help. Especially when it comes to heavy hitters like Rockstar, they pushed out 4 major games last gen, this gen it looks like we'll be getting just 1.
Woah I thought the PS4 was going to be their last console
Some 4k TVs do not have any form of analog input, beyond standard coaxial. Point being, will you be able to get TVs with analog inputs 5 years from now? 10? 10 years ago, my nothing special Toshiba 19" flatscreen TV had two component inputs, 3 composite/svideo inputs, VGA, and 2 HDMI ports. You are hard pressed to find that on any TV like that now. I had to go out of my way with my Sony Bravia, that has one composite, one composite/component combo, and 4 HDMI ports. 4 HDMI ports is welcome, but that was at the cost of the analog inputs. And that was 2 years ago.
Sony announced first as well as released first this generation and by most standards, the PS4 is the dominant console.
This seems sudden. But the last generation lasted a fucking decade. It just refused to end because nobody seemed sure what to do next I can only assume. Most generations were a lot faster than that.
I think it's because we're getting to the point where there isn't really anything big happening in terms of graphical enhancements. We're kinda just waiting at this point for the next thing (which I guess would be RTX). Not only that but there's becoming less and less reasons to own a console over a PC.
Console CPUs are pretty heavily restricting, and it shows in games IMO. Next-gen consoles are undoubtedly going to use Ryzen CPUs, question is how many cores (are they going to try and hit 8 cores?), and if they decide to go with a discrete GPU block like the 7th generation did.
