First one's free, after then ten bucks, five with PS+
First finally allowing crossplay, then allowing you to change your name. You're finally catching up on basic features sony.
From what I read up this is actually a big change for Sony because of how poorly thought out their user database was. They're having to get developers to actually change network coding for this, on launch there will even be a list of supported games and un-supported games just won't work online if you change your name. All because from what I can tell they're using online display names as primary keys for some insane reason.
Still better than a 16 digit friend code.
I still wish these people would follow Nintendo's lead and make online $20/year. It's pretty clear the money doesn't go to game servers.
What? Care to explain that.
only took them 10 fucking years
I don't think anyone should follow their lead. They are charging $20 a year for p2p servers, holding cloud data hostage, no built in voice chat, and their incentives outside of those are a handful of 30 year old NED games that need to connect online once a week.
yea. This shit should be free. I get that people could be uninformed enough to believe that game servers could conceivably be hosted at Microsoft or Sony, but with Rocket League and Fortnite demonstrating cross-platform capabilities, a quietly ignored byproduct of that revelation is that the servers are obviously developer hosted and maintained, which means the reasoning for the online fees these corporations have been giving us has been pure bullshit.
I've had my name for so long that I don't know what I would change it to. It's such a dumb name, but I can't let it go.
I never understand why these are paid services? Steam has been around for 10 years+ and you can change your name as much as you want. Other systems have a wait period but its still free.
I'm thankful they're finally rolling this out.
My PSN ID is my full name.
See, back when I made it, people had some sort of common decency.
It used to just be silly trash talk and one whack job, now, I get people saying they'll come and kill me because I remained silent and scored goals in rocket league.
I'd talked to Sony about it multiple times, and they just go "Well, we can just add a strike to their account, but that's it".
I remember getting upset at a rep saying "So my life really means that little to Sony, that you can't just get some engineer to go change my name in a database. I have to lose my $1k+ library to feel safe? Disgusting".
not trying to defend Nintendo, but aren't a lot of PS4 game p2p as well, and both Switch and PS4 keep your saves for 6 months without subscription. PSN doesn't really have all that much over Nintendo aside from some games every month and voice chat.
Nintendo's only saving grace is that you can split the online fee among friends with the family plan. I got 8 people together, including myself, so we each pay a bit under $5 a year. That makes it at least somewhat tolerable.
Only Sony keeps your saves for 6 months. Nintendo initially had then delete the moment your sub ended, but after the backlash decided to give a week long grace period.
Meanwhile, xbone and PC offer cloud services free of charge no matter what "sub" youv got.
I don't play my PS4 online so I can't say about them doing p2p.
The grace period is 6 months for Nintendo online last I checked. But that is besides the point, still a pretty shit service, especially when like you say, other platforms offer it for free.
Databases are haaarrddd.
I can honestly see how some enterprising fuckup of a developer thought using usernames as unique keys was a good idea, after all they need to be unique! But it's still an incredibly stupid idea. The initial PSN was a stitched together mess, but it was a free mess so we dealt with the weird maintenance times and missing features.
Now they're charging for basic access to it there's really no reason they shouldn't have fixed this with the start of this generation. Rather than having to patch games to support it.
Here's a good read about this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/9mzuu4/playstation_has_changed_massively_behind_the/
You can't change your steam account name, only your display name
finally i can get rid of my username from 2011
yeah that's why I say PSN and Nintendo Online are pretty much the same except Nintendo's cheaper, plus you can already change your nickname on Nintendo for free iirc. Online subscriptions for consoles are all bad.
My little brother PSN is his fullname (well his first and his nickname, with it's just the first 3 letters of his last name)
He's 10
That's a yikes from me.
Sharing the information of a minor on the internet can put you (Sony here) in a legal puddle.
Even as much as storage could land Sony with thousands of dollars of fines if they don't have the legal terms to protect them
Send them an email
there's no source on this. i'm like, 900% sure this was a rumor spread around to piggy back off the already-existing bias against nintendo's online.
...Its not a rumor it was their actual policy.
Where's the proof? Did anyone cancel their subscription on day 2 to see if that happened?
Microsoft and Sony also ask 60 $ a year for p2p servers.
That was an insane decision if true
You never use meaningful data for persistent unique identifiers precisely for this reason. People change their minds, not letting them update how they use your service at all is insane. (Name changes in particular should have some limitations to prevent abuse, though.)
