hi. i'm a brazilian game developer and the brazilian presidential election is scaring the fuck out of me. we've got a scenario that is somewhat similar to the Trump X Hilary case Our Trump, however, is far worse far worse and to make things even shittier, a huge part of our country's population believes that he is the cure to all of our problems some of his supporters are out there doing horrible things. all over facebook and twitter i keep seeing news of people getting harmed by his supporters. a couple of hours ago someone got shot in my street over an argument. they etched a swastika on a woman's body, for crying out loud. a 19yr old got attacked by a group of people because she was holding an LGBT flag. people are dying out there i never thought i'd see this happening to me and to those i care about and thats not all: there's a rather large chance that his victory will plunge the country back into a dictatorship. i am scared and all my friends are scared. we're too afraid to leave our homes because we fear that something may happen to us too and most of our families are also supporting this colossal douchefuck. i havent talked to my parents in days, for instance. i know this may not make a lot of sense for most of you and i apologize for that. i just needed to get this whole thing off my chest. i just want something to ease this feeling, it feels like something horrible is about to happen and i cant shake this feeling off i think it might be a good idea to leave the country if he wins. i work remotely so this is a possibility (i dont make a lot of money though so Europe / North America are a no-go, rent is too expensive)
I've seen lots of people compare this guy to Trump, but honestly he reminds me more of Duterte, which is much worse...
I feel you, the climate and the turmoil here had been similar as well with Duterte, and there's already been steps taken on making himself kind of a dictator starting with martial law on a quarter of the country indefinitely, and to keep things short, everything just got worse economically as well. The country is still split and divided on support for him as well, but overtime there has been more vocal critics at least. I cannot judge and gauge how it is there for Brazil fully, and from what I read it is riskier and scarier there due to how much power the military can have there. But I do hope at least in sharing you a sentiment and personal experience here will help, in that there will always be people opposing complete dictatorships, both in the general populace and within the governing bodies. Assuming and hopefully so that the potential new administration just won't go gung-ho and start shooting everyone right from their homes, any new administration will still have to work with the populace, even if the large chunk of the populace are their supporters. If you're staying and if you live in a relatively middle-class area and are used to your city/neighborhood, you might be able to make it through the years and hopefully things get better from there as long as you keep aware and avoid any potential danger and conflict as much as you can. My family always had wanted to move out of this country as well for the longest time, but sadly restricted due to limitations and feasibility of moving abroad at the moment. But if you say you can move out and work at another country, I say go for it, but make sure to keep backup plans and make sure can guarantee you can find a place to live and work somewhere else. I'd definitely start looking for options available right now for you and plan ahead. There's that one Facepunch user who was able to leave Venezuela and move to Sweden. Thanks to looking over his options, he's able to study, work and live there smoothly. See your options with your current qualifications and line of work, I know you said Europe or North America is also not really feasible, but give it a go still and do some research since you may find something that'll work. If not there's most likely a lot of options for you there within South America, and maybe also consider some places in Asia and Oceania. Stay safe there and I hope things work out.
Feeling that your country is regressing and on the verge of disaster is a miserable, soul-crushing experience. And continually seeing reactionary, fearful morons intentionally make it worse because they keep getting brainwashed by the same tired old divisive, extremist rhetoric, and would rather lash out violently and throw all their hopes behind whatever evil mentally defective blowhard strongman is yelling the loudest, instead of manning up and facing their country's issues with dignity, reason, and empathy, is like being kicked when you're down. Trump and the Republicans might not be on this level yet but I know for a fact that a lot of Americans can empathize with how you feel right now.
I'm paying 280€ here for rent, electricity, internet and gas. I don't know how much you make but if you get flatmates and work and study, it's possible to live quite good over here. Europe is pretty expensive if you live in the big cities but can be quite cheap if you know where to look. Members on here will probably help you out if you're thinking about leaving. It's a fucked up situation though and I hope everything works out for you and your friends. Stay safe!
Start getting the money to leave your country now, rather than later.
Damn, bonick, hope you're staying safe. As others have said, moving out soon would be great. I think moving to Portugal would be good, pretty chill country and since it's a portuguese-speaking country, you'd be fine! Hope things work out well regardless of your choices though.
