These things are beginning to perform like something out of science fiction
That robot scaled those 3 blocks smoother than I could manage right now probably and I honestly don't know how to feel about that.
As a mechanical engineer seeing this is awesome, the work that went into developing until this point is massive. On the other hand I also saw enough movies and I really wanted to be safe hiding up stairs killer robots can't scale.
Now just scale it up to 10x and let me control it from a cockpit. Maybe scale it up like 25x and give me a friend to control it with.
Is it running a fixed program from a certain spot or do they just point it in a certain direction and it figures it out?
It has lots of senses to help it correct itself. It's not just running a simple fixed step-by-step movement algorithm, it's continuously adapting and correcting errors on the fly.
looks way less efficient than it really is

And yet it's pretty much the best we've got

Let's not forget our favorite sidekick spot.

We have begun field testing the Spot robot for commercial usage around
the world. After an initial mapping run, Spot autonomously navigated two
dynamic construction sites in Tokyo and used a specialized payload for
surveying work progress. An additional camera in its hand lets Spot do
even more detailed inspection work on site. The Spot robot will be
available in the second half of 2019 for a variety of applications.

These videos got me thinking one time... This isn't a huge epiphany but once it hit me I was kind of shook.
We're like, a very short time away from robots that could decide to be untouchable by you. What I mean is... Any day one of these videos is going to be called "this guy cant touch this robot no matter how he tries" and unlike human vs human fighting, the robot isn't going to need to move very much to avoid the guy. That makes sense, right? It'll look like someone trying to catch a hummingbird. It just, moves out of the way slightly and you never catch it.
That's some science-fiction shit but also some in-the-surprisingly-near-future shit.
