https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/11/arts/music/fyre-festival-organizer-sentenced-fraud.html In March, Mr. McFarland pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud after investigators concluded that he had defrauded investors in his company, Fyre Media, as well as a subsidiary that had promoted the music festival, resulting in $24 million in losses. Then in July, Mr. McFarland pleaded guilty to two more counts of fraud related to another company that he ran while out on bail that sold fake tickets to fashion, music and sports events and was said to have cost at least 30 victims a minimum of about $150,000. “I know that I betrayed the trust of my investors, my customers, my family,” Mr. McFarland said in a lengthy statement before Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald pronounced her sentence. “This is an extremely bitter reality,” he added. The judge called Mr. McFarland “unique in this court’s memory,” citing the fact that he had committed crimes while out on bail and had lied to federal law enforcement agents about the ticket company’s operations during a voluntary meeting in June. “The defendant is a serial fraudster and to date his fraud, like a circle, has no end,” she said. “Mr. McFarland has been dishonest most of his life.” There's a good rundown of all the other crimes he committed in the article.
fucking Fyre Festival, fuck this guy
I'm amazed at the balls he had, it was one thing to be the brains behind that whole Fyre fiasco, it's another to continue committing fraud with impunity while you're on trial.
This dude looks like a prick
He looks like a grownup version of scumbag steve. https://www.hindustantimes.com/rf/image_size_640x362/HT/p1/2014/09/13/Incoming/Pictures/1263587_Wallpaper2.jpg
Here's a quick rundown of the festival for those who don't know. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBPg5ftCMv8
I still feel like they wouldn't have come down on him nearly as hard if it hadn't been rich people he screwed with.
It's been proven several times already that noone bought the high end tickets and that a majority of the attendees weren't rich. It's partially why the whole thing failed as he expected the expensive tickets to fund the whole thing.
Great, I hope this becomes a standard. People shouldn't be allowed to escape justice by hiding their actions behind the "actions of a corporation." If we ever have another great recession, go after the damn bankers, not just the banks.
Idk, i like the idea of building gulags festivals that we can send all the rich kids to
Their base ticket price was still $1000, and clearly they made more from the investors who gambled millions on it.
