How hard can you fuck up a remaster? Assuming that it is just a matter of upscaling and bringing them to the latest platforms.
EA: it's the 25th anniversary of the game series we bought & murdered, would anyone like to buy them again with horrible "modernized" art?
I'm obviously glad that they're going to do something with the series again, but after all that's happened i just can't have much hope for it. C&C Generals 2 looked interesting and something at least along the lines of a proper game (outside of the micro-transaction concerns) but that was cancelled with the reason given of "It's not what the fans want", so then many years after doing nothing with the series they announce a mobile spin-off and call it C&C for "a new generation" as if we're supposed to like it and be happy and that's what the best use of the beloved IP is. To have them come out and say "People don't like the mobile game? They want a full RTS?! We'll, maybe we can do something" after those complaints about it, as if they had no idea people wanted a new game in the first place, sounds a bit disingenous to some extent.
It's no less valid of a product than Starcraft Remastered, I'd buy it. On sale. For like 5 bucks.
I'm pretty 'Meh' on this announcement, on one hand CNCnet allows me to play most of the franchise on modern systems and online, OpenRA is free, open source and fantastic all of this making any sort of remaster pointless and not worth anyone's time or money unless somehow they are able to do a competent job which considering this is the company that digs up the franchise it killed so it can mock its rotting corpse every couple of years with announced then cancelled games or FB/mobile cash grabs I doubt it. On the other hand, if this includes a updated and online revived Renegade multiplayer (I never really cared for RenX) I'd be up for it.
As long as they don't pull some shit like loot boxes for units normally unlocked by playing or reducing tiberium/mineral veins to 'encourage' people to buy them with real money(per mission).
Make superweapon cooldowns take forever unless you spend money/in game currency bought with money to speed it up.
Tbh I've thought a proper remaster for Tiberian Dawn and the first Red Alert would be a good idea for a while now. One that takes advantage of the improvements to the controls and gameplay features from later instalments. I hope we still get the endearingly crap 90s action movie-esque FMVs.
Silent Hill HD
If they remaster tiberian sun i'd fucking die happy.
Keep an eye on OpenRA. I hope EA doesn't go after them.
Did that Clash Royale rip off game ever come out
I could go for a Generals remaster, but as for the old C&C and Red Alert games, we have OpenRA, that's all I need
As long as they retain mod support I'll be happy
"we heard you loud and clear" says company that received the most humongous backlash to micro-transactions then doubled down on putting them in sports games since those players don't complain
Following the reveal of Rivals, we heard you loud and clear: the Command & Conquer community also wants to see the franchise return to PC. And as a fan of C&C for over 20 years, I couldn’t agree more. With that in mind we’ve be Oh, your cheeky fuckers. You're just trying to eat your cake and at it too.
there's a lot of problems getting the late 2d games running on modern hardware sadly. I really want a working RA2 though, and NOT on fucking origin
Wheeling out the corpse of the horse they bought and murdered many years ago to beat some more...
EA did good with it when they first got a hold of it (C&C Tiberium wars, Kane's Wrath) then they decided that making fun games was unprofitable suddenly then killed it.
hate to break it to you but cnc 3 was just a murdered sequel to generals they didn't approve the studio to work on to begin with.
I'd be down for a Generals remake. But I won't get excited for anything because I know they'll find a way to fill it with micro transactions or loot crates.
EA also posted this announcement directly on the OpenRA website and is encouraging people to use their forums for discussion OpenRA
pretty sure their community guy went out and searched for the few remaining cnc communities and sent them the press release.
If you truly gave a crap about those series Generals 2 would have been an actual thing but instead is now just a bunch of youtube videos, I remember when microsoft took down the halo mod for generals that shit was monumental for the biggest dick move ever I will never forget that. I still haven't played Halo Wars it might be also because of me holding a grudge over that. If there's one thing EA did right was to leave Renegade X alone which was really fun and had its run.
Remember Call of Duty 4 remastered? That's how hard
They really have no real legal grounds to do so provided OpenRA doesn't profit off their work. EA released RA, 95' and RS as freeware to the public a long time ago. They stopped hosting it awhile ago but it's still freeware and easy to get which is why OpenRA host game assets for the client to download with no issues.
My fear with a modern Generals Remake is limitations to infantry/vehicle creation. Generals was fun for a wide variety of strategies to defeat your friends. I loved building up large armies and Zerg Rushing them. I also really hope a Shockwave-like mod comes along too. Shockwave, in my opinion, added the icing to the cake.
Not to dump on the cynicism but as a fan of C&C since RA1 I'm pretty stoked. Luckily for them if they plan on making a new GDI/NOD universe game, Joseph Kucan don't seem to age so gib fmv cheese please.
Generals wasn't even related to C&C. It was a side project by Westwood West that they slapped Command and Conquer onto late into the game's development. I used to have a magazine with previews of the game, and Command and Conquer was nowhere to be found in the four page article. EA then shoved the game out the door just a few months. The entire Generals feature of the game was cut along with the General's challenge (both later sort of brought back in zero hour). A lot of left overs can be found for those in the game files. Zero hour was also developed in 8 months, and was largely built from things that didn't make it into Generals in the first place. C&C 3 was largely developed by people that worked on Generals and Red Alert 2. OG Westwood's last main project was Renegade, which came after Emperor: Battle for Dune and ran on the same engine. The SAGE engine used in Generals and C&C 3 was derived from the Westwood 3d engine, and generals still references it as W3D. The engine is still used by EA, and a fork of it by Petroglyph. Tiberian Sun also suffered heavily from EA. Westwood kept missing development deadlines, because EA kept moving them back and trimming resources. EA put tons of pressure on the development team, which contributed to their inability to meet deadlines. Westwood was never exactly punctual, but prior to 1998 and EA, they were never rushed. As for a remaster, I wouldn't expect much. They'll probably just take the base game, slap a renderer hack into it, along with some origin online features, then call it a day.
