A key Democratic congressman has a step-by-step plan to enact the end of federal marijuana prohibition in 2019 if his party takes control of the House, and he's laying it all out in a
new memo.
"Congress is out of step with the American people and the states on cannabis," Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) writes in the eight-page document addressed to House Democratic
Leadership. "We have an opportunity to correct course if Democrats win big in November. There’s no question: cannabis prohibition will end. Democrats should lead the way."
House Republican leaders have blocked floor votes on dozens of cannabis-related amendments during the current 115th Congress. Not a single marijuana measure has advanced to a
vote before the full body in 2017 or 2018.
But Blumenauer's plan, which he is calling a "Blueprint to Legalize Marijuana," is for a Democratic House to lead on the issue and build pressure on the Senate, where bipartisan support
for cannabis reform is already growing. The Oregon congressman says that after the 116th Congress is seated in January, Democrats should begin holding a series of hearings on
cannabis issues.
"Almost every standing House committee has jurisdiction over some aspect of marijuana policy," he writes. "Within the first six months of the new Congress, these committees should
hold hearings, bring in experts, and discuss potential policy fixes."
His vision is that by the end of 2019, "Marijuana will be legal at the federal level, and states allowed to responsibly regulate its use. The federal government will not interfere with state
efforts to responsibly regulate marijuana use within their borders."
But while there is majority support for ending marijuana prohibition among House Democrats, the party's leadership has so far appeared lukewarm to the idea of prioritizing the issue
in 2019. But Blumenauer is worried that if Democrats don't move quickly to seize the marijuana reform, the GOP may seek to make the issue their own.
Also this week, Blumenauer is introducing legislation to address U.S. federal policy that could prevent Canadians who have ever used marijuana or work or invest in the legal cannabis
industry from visiting the country.
Very nice.
Can't wait till our nanny state declares they won't follow suit.

Good. People are being handed lifetime bans from the US for admitting to have ever used weed, or even simply being an investor in a legal Canadian marijuana-related company. It's understandable as weed is a Schedule 1 controlled substance in the US, but the entire policy is stupid.
I live in California where we legalized it for recreational use and the one thing I was not expecting to have as a consequence of legalization is cringy billboards to advertise our local """budtenders""""
Surprisingly, people are pretty tame about smoking it in public. It was always smelled like weed in downtown san jose before it was legalized
IMHO, I tend to prefer opiods over pot, but if pot was readily accessible, I'd take it any day of the week. I used to half-ass grow my own plants back in the day, and stopped only because one of my cats gained a habit for eating them.
All things considered regarding this though: It's something the states are gonna have to throwout. North Dakota has Measure 3 right now, which is literally rustling so many folks in the midwest it's not even funny.
That is literally the problem. Opioids are infinitely more addictive than pot, so when they're equally easy to access, folks are way more likely to dive for the shit that kills you.
Eyup. The high of opiates and opioids is pretty hard to beat.
The only thing I can compare an opiate high too is the time I almost drowned and had an NDE. You are put in such a pure space of tranquility, but it's a really unnerving tranquility. Like you are on a balancing act of loving and enjoying the serenity, and having the paranoia of thinking that such a thing shouldn't be possible while still being alive, and wonder if you took too much.
Sounds like ket or acid more than opiates. They just made me not able to shit for a few days.
Toxx?
I do feel like US weed legalization is far more likely now that canada has done it. It's already legal for medical use in over half the united states.
after a certain point it's gonna be impossible to enforce federal laws on marijuana, if they haven't already reached that point.
Highly unlikely, since Opioids are a different beast entirely. It'd be like expecting Alcohol or Tobacco to kick the Opioid crisis in the nuts
